While many view the Daily Mail as a harmless, recreational newspaper, a newly published study definitively absolutely 100% proves it is actually highly addictive, causes mental judgement problems and damages health
While viewed by many as a harmless newspaper read by people who just want to relax and unwind or perhaps do some harmless recreational experimentation with different ideologies a new study has provided unquestionable proof that the notorious newspaper actually inflicts considerable damage on all those who read it, link to it, or even so much as look directly at it.
The detailed study looked at reports of the effects of reading the Daily Mail from the last 20 years. To clarify, it wasnt a 20-year study; who would make that sort of mistake? You might see those nostalgia shows like I love the 80s, but you dont call them a decade-long TV show. That would be misleading. It would appear to be that youre ridiculously exaggerating something for your own ends.

Minards House in Oreston, Plymouth, Devon, is said to have once been lived in by Alexander Selkirk, who experts believe is the man behind the fictional character Robinson Crusoe.
Dewani pleaded not guilty to killing his wife Anni during their honeymoon in Cape Town in 2010, and other related charges, at the start of his trial in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.
Speaking from the dock, Dewani said he was “not guilty” of charges of murder, kidnapping and obstructing justice.
“I plead not guilty to all five counts,” he said in a clear voice.
Dewani, dressed in a black suit, tie and white shirt, stood in the dock and looked down at prosecutor Adrian Mopp.
He appeared generally calm, craning his head slightly to listen to proceedings and making fists with his hands. At times, he frowned slightly or looked away to the side.
Dewani is charged with murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and conspiracy to commit these crimes. He is also charged with defeating the ends of justice.
Deputy Judge President Jeannette Traverso sat with her arms crossed and looked at the indictment in front of her. She was flanked by two assessors.
FamiliesBoth the families of Dewani and his dead wife were in attendance, sitting on opposite ends of the courtroom.
Shrien Dewani’s family, including his mother and father, seemed relatively calm and cheerful, chatting to his defence team and each other.
Around 40 people packed the benches in the overhead public gallery. They watched as journalists pushed and shoved through a narrow court door to secure a spot before proceedings got underway.
Two flat-screen television sets were set up in the front of the court. Two smaller screens were placed next to the prosecution and defence teams.
Dewani had his own flat-screen television fixed to the dock.
Opposing claimsInitially seen as a hijacking that ended in tragedy on November 13 2010, police later claimed they had evidence that Dewani had conspired with others to kill Anni.
Dewani claims the couple were hijacked as they were being driven through Gugulethu in Cape Town in a minibus taxi. He was released unharmed but Anni was driven away and later found shot dead in the abandoned minibus on November 14.
A series of delays played out over the next four years, punctuated by efforts to extradite Dewani to South Africa and consistent claims by his defence team that he was innocent, and mentally unfit to stand trial.
In the same period, three Capetonians stood trial for the murder and were jailed.
Driver Zola Tongo said in a plea bargain – following which he was jailed for 18 years – that Dewani had offered him R15 000 to have Anni killed.
Accomplices Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni – who shot Anni – were handed 25-year and life sentences respectively.
Dewani was eventually extradited in April this year and sent to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital. In mid-August, he was declared fit to stand trial after undergoing psychiatric observation.
He will remain at the hospital for the duration of the trial. Speaking at a press conference in Cape Town on Sunday evening, Anni’s father Vinod Hindocha said the family wanted to know the truth about her death.
“Now that I am here, all that I ask for is the full story and justice. It is now up to the South African justice system to obtain the full story of how my little daughter died.” – Sapa

How to talk to terrorists by Jonathan Powell
Terrorism can never be defeated by military means alone. But how do you go about negotiating with people who have blood on their hands? Britains chief broker of the Northern Ireland peace deal explains how it can and must be done (for a start, always shake hands)
In 1919, the British government had its first major encounter with terrorism, when the Irish Republican Army was established to drive the British out of Ireland. The government responded to the IRAs acts of terror which included the assassination of civilians as well as soldiers with indiscriminate reprisals; these were met in turn by further escalation from the IRA. The prime minister, David Lloyd George, declared that the British government would never talk to the murder gang, as he described the IRA. But by 1920, it became clear to both sides that a military victory was impossible. Lloyd George secretly began to initiate contact with Michael Collins and other IRA leaders, using a relatively junior former customs official, Alfred Cope who managed to open up a channel to the rebels and negotiate a ceasefire. This led to full-blown talks in Downing Street in 1921, and eventually to an agreement, albeit a flawed one that later unravelled.
Seventy-six years later, in December 1997, Tony Blair and I sat down in the same cabinet room in Downing Street with Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness; the negotiating teams, from Sinn Féin and the British government, even sat on the same sides of the table as they had in 1921. On both occasions, the meeting was a big event. There were more TV cameras outside Downing Street than there had been on election day seven months earlier, and we were all nervous. Alastair Campbell had ordered the Christmas tree be removed from in front of the door of Number 10, so that there could be no pictures of terrorists in front of festive decorations.
When I first met Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness I declined to shake their hands a petty gesture I now regret
We usually delay talking to armed groups too long, and as a result, a large number of people die unnecessarily
Talking to terrorists and agreeing with them are not the same thing

Why politicians need historians by David Armitage
Few policymakers today seem interested in lessons from the past. Their short-termism will fail to tackle the new megatrends
For much of the last 40 years, historians on both sides of the Atlantic have been trained to detach themselves from the supposedly distorting imperatives of relevance. They have addressed their work to other historians more than to the wider public. When they have reached out, it has rarely been to shape public policy. It is time to overcome that fastidiousness.
History has played little role in policy-making for at least a generation. It made news when in 2012 the then foreign secretary, William Hague, raised the profile of the Foreign and Commonwealth Offices in-house historians by moving them into the FCOs main building on Whitehall. They were languishing in a basement, Hague said, and now the light is shining on their books.

From George Bernard Shaw to Nicholas de Jongh, there is a tradition of reviewers penning their own scripts. So can you learn to write plays by watching them? And does being a playwright make you a better critic?
Critics so Kenneth Tynan once quipped know the way, they just cant drive the car. Is that the case? Historys littered with critic-playwrights. Plato was one: he burned his early plays upon turning philosopher. There are several still working today: the Telegraphs Dominic Cavendish, the Daily MailsPatrick Marmion and Time Outs Stewart Pringle have all played the roles of critic and playwright.
Nicholas de Jongh is perhaps the best known. After more than 35 years as a theatre critic first for the Guardian, then the Evening Standard De Jongh staged his first play, A Plague Over England, aboutJohn Gielguds arrest for cottaging. His second, The Unquiet Grave of García Lorca, has just opened at the Drayton Arms in London.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) entered Kobani on the Syria-Turkey border Monday, after intense street fighting with Kurdish forces trying to defend the Syrian town, the BBC reports.
The Sunni militant extremists raised their black flags on several buildings, after pushing into three neighborhoods in the east of the city, also known as Ayn al-Arab.
Kobani has been besieged for three weeks, and more than 160,000 civilians have fled to the Turkish border.
ISIS fighters pushed through the defenses of the Syrian-Kurdish troops with tanks and artillery, killing many in street battles. The militants now have control of Mistenur, a key hill above the town, the BBC says.
“They have surrounded us almost from every side with their tanks. They have been shelling the city with heavy weapons. Kurdish fighters are resisting as much as they can with the limited weapons they have,” Asya Abdullah, a senior Kurdish politician and co-leader of the Democratic Union Party, told the BBC.
If the ISIS militants take control of Kobani, they will have a huge strategic corridor along the Turkish border, linking with the terrorist group’s positions in Aleppo to the west and Raqqa to the east.
Heavy clashes between ISIS fighters and Kurdish defenders raged all of Monday and over the weekend but despite the help of U.S. led air strikes, the militants managed to close in on Kobani.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says he will do everything he can to save the people living in the border town.
“We will do everything possible to help the people of Kobani because they are our brothers and sisters. We don’t see them as Kurds or Turkmen or Arabs.”
He added that “if there is a need of intervention to Kobani,” then “there is a need of intervention [in] all Syria.”
For the past week, tanks belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces have been positioned on the hills close to Kobani in order to reinforce the border.
But many Turkish Kurds and refugees have slammed Ankara for not doing enough to defeat ISIS, which is now knocking on Turkey’s front door.
