Vladimir Putin is “a common criminal dressed up as a head of state” who personally ordered the murder of the Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko, the public inquiry into his death has been told.

Gunmen Storm Libyan Hotel, Kill 3 Guardsby webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
Gunmen attacked a hotel in Libya's capital Tuesday, setting off a car bomb outside the building and killing at least three guards. Security officials said the attackers stormed the Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli and holed up inside. The hotel is the same site from which kidnappers briefly abducted former Prime Minister Ali Zidan in 2013. Libya is struggling for stability more than three years after the ouster of former leader Moammar Gadhafi, with multiple groups trying to assert...
The indigenous language IsiXhosa only refers to the LGBTI community in derogatory terms. We must find new words to articulate our sexual diversity, argues Lwando Scott
A few months ago I received an email asking my advice about the IsiXhosa language equivalents for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex.
But in IsiXhosa, an indigenous South African language spoken by 23% of the population, these words only exist in derogatory terms.
I have often struggled terms like gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex in my mother tongue
The absence of the words in IsiXhosa, does not mean that there are no gay, lesbian, transgender or intersex individuals amongst Xhosa people
@lwandoscott @HOLAAfrica great piece. As a Xhosa queer also find it difficult talking re:LGBTI b/c the language makes it seem a Western idea
Saying that we don’t have a specific word for “transgender therefore transgender people do not exist” is lazy logic
IsiXhosa, like all other indigenous languages of South Africa, are not evolving

The storm’s size means that up to 60 million people in nearly a dozen...

Tutankhamun’s botched beard: conservation chief demoted to royal vehicles role by Patrick Kingsley in Cairo
Egyptian Museum in Cairo owns up to fixing beard with wrong glue and relocates head of conservation to lower-profile site
It’s a pharaoh cop, Egyptian archaeology officials have admitted. After initially downplaying reports that Tutankhamun’s beard had been fixed with the wrong glue, the Egyptian Museum has owned up to the error – and moved its chief conservator to less glamorous pastures.
As head of conservation, Dr Elham Abdelrahman bore ultimate responsibility for the botched gluing operation, and having come unstuck, has been moved to a lower-profile role at the museum of royal vehicles.
