Study: Saliva Test Could Help Diagnose Children with Autismby webdesk@voanews.com (Jessica Berman)
A spit test may someday be used to help diagnose children with autism. Children with the complex neuro-developmental disorder often have trouble communicating, and a saliva test - which detects the levels of various proteins - could offer an objective way to identify youngsters with autism. Children with autism spectrum disorder have differences in protein levels, compared to those who do not have autism, and those differences may be detected in their saliva. Researchers at Clarkson University and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh found that nine proteins were elevated in the saliva of the six autistic children who were studied, and three proteins were lower or even absent. Alisa Woods of the SUNY Plattsburgh Center for Neurobehavioral Health helped lead the study. She says youngsters suspected of having the disorder - which is marked by interpersonal communication difficulties and repetitive behaviors - are currently diagnosed after being observed by psychologists. "They rely on behavior, they are complicated, there might be some subjectivity to them. Even though they are very, very good, [a saliva test] could be simpler; it might be a simple screening method and a more objective one," says Woods. An estimated one in every 68 children in the United States has autism spectrum disorder and experts say that number is growing. Similar prevalences are likely around the world. Woods says one of the dozen proteins that is altered in autistic children is linked to gastrointestinal problems. "Because gastrointestinal distress is so common in people with autism, maybe this could be a biomarker for people with that problem. People with autism sometimes have difficulties communicating their symptoms because it's a social communication disorder. So, this biomarker could be useful for seeing if people have this type of problem... and it might direct treatment," says Woods. Another protein in the complex involves immune function. Woods says researchers gravitated toward a saliva test because it is quick and easy to perform. It could identify the disorder earlier than waiting for behaviors to develop, so treatment could begin sooner. She says the results of study - published in the journal Autism Research - need to be repeated by scientists, in larger groups of children, to determine whether a saliva test for autism could become a reality.

European Union and NATO leaders are calling on Russia to stop supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine and to adhere to a mediated truce agreed to last week in Belarus. Despite the agreement, pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine attacked withdrawing government troops and took control of a key town in eastern Ukraine. Fighting has had a disastrous effect on civilian life in the rebel-controlled areas and many residents are fleeing across the border into Russia. Zlatica Hoke has more.
Britain released photographs on Wednesday of what it described as Russia's most advanced anti-aircraft artillery system, being operated in eastern Ukraine.

Denis Abramov / VedomostiFour Russian Navy servicemen have been convicted of high treason.
Four Russian Navy servicemen have been convicted of high treason and have already begun serving out their sentences, Interfax news agency reported Thursday.
The news comes after reports of several other treason cases having been launched in recent months, including a high-profile case against Svetlana Davydova, a mother of seven from Smolensk.
"Senior naval officers Zakhary Agapishvili, Sergei Danilchenko and two other servicemen — Levan Charkviani and Konstantin Yashin — have been sentenced to prison time," a spokesperson for the Supreme Court said in comments carried by Interfax on Thursday. "The convicted individuals are already serving out their sentences."
The men, found guilty of having passed on secret information to foreign countries, have been in prison since last fall, the source was cited as saying.
In addition to their prison sentences, the men have also been stripped of their military honors.
As is typical in these cases, it was unclear what information the men were convicted of having divulged, which country or organization they are believed of having given it to, and how long their prison terms will last, as the press service declined to reveal further details due to the highly confidential nature of their cases.
Under Russia's Criminal Code, a treason conviction carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
News of the sailors' convictions brings the total count of treason cases reported in recent weeks up to eight. Beyond the four sailors and Davydova, other suspects include: Pyotr Parpulov, a former employee of Sochi International Airport; Yevgeny Petrin, an employee of the Russian Orthodox Church and Gennady Kravtsov, whose background details have not been disclosed.
A man has been detained in Moscow after trying to break into the U.S. Embassy completely naked, a news report said Thursday.

Ukraine's President Calls for International Peacekeeping Mission by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called for an international peacekeeping mission for his country after ordering several thousand of his troops out of the strategic eastern Ukrainian town of Debaltseve, which has been taken over by Russia-backed separatists. Poroshenko's office reported late Wednesday that a meeting of the country's National Defense and Security Council chaired by the Ukrainian president had come to a decision that the United Nations should be asked to send "a peacekeeping mission, which will act in accordance with the mandate of the U.N. Security Council." The move came just hours after thousands of Ukrainian troops fled Debaltseve, a strategic rail hub that links the separatist strongholds of Luhansk and Donetsk. The appeal for international peacekeepers was rejected Thursday by both Moscow and the rebels. Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations said the proposal suggests Kyiv is trying to undermine the cease-fire reached last week in Minsk, Belarus. "When someone starts to propose some schemes instead of doing what had been agreed, it primarily arouses suspicion that they want to undermine the Minsk agreements," Churkin was quoted as saying by the Russian state-owned TASS news agency. Denis Pushilin, spokesman for the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, also said Ukraine's request for international peacekeepers "violates the set of measures aimed at implementing Minsk's February 12 peaceful settlement agreements," according to the Interfax news agency. The rebels reportedly have captured hundreds of government troops and surrounded those it did not take prisoner, cutting off their food and water supplies. The White House said Wednesday that it is "crystal clear" that Russia and the separatists in eastern Ukraine are not living up to the cease-fire agreement, and warned this puts them "at risk of greater costs." "They should be mindful of that as they consider their next steps," spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, adding that the Obama administration continues to believe "that the way the situation can be resolved is around the negotiating table." Also Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Washington does not consider the Minsk agreement and cease-fire in Ukraine "dead," but remains "gravely concerned" over reports that the separatists are continuing to attack Debaltseve and are violating the cease-fire in other locations. Psaki said Secretary of State Kerry spoke to Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on Wednesday and urged him to stop Russian and separatist attacks. French leaders, who helped negotiate the cease-fire, also insisted Wednesday that it is not dead. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the main task is fulfilling the truce and saving the lives of the people stuck in the fighting in eastern Ukraine. Russia insists it has no weapons or forces in eastern Ukraine, despite evidence and reports from witnesses that it has taken a direct role in the fighting.

Putin ‘a World-Class Hooligan without a World-Class Policeman,’ Zaydman Says by paul goble (noreply@blogger.com)
Paul Goble
Staunton, February 19 – Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine and the West’s failure to stand up to him shows what can happen when there is “a world-class hooligan without a world-class policeman,” Vadim Zaydman says, a horrific situation that may continue for decades if Putin remains in office and the West remains in the state where it is now.
Everyone is familiar with what happens when there isn’t an effective police force in one or another city: the worst emerge and impose their will on the innocent. But that situation has now spread to the world as a result of Putin’s actions and the unwillingness of the Western powers to force him to live according to the rules.
And they are well aware of something else: what will stop hooliganism when it first appears is relatively small compared to what will be necessary to do the same when the hooligans have gotten away with their crimes and assume that they will be able to continue to act with impunity.
For 15 years, the West has deluded itself about the nature of Putin, hiding behind the question “who is Mr. Putin” as if it were not clear to the unaided eye as a result of his actions in Chechnya, Georgia and now Ukraine what kind of a criminal he is and why stopping him will be ever harder, thecommentator says (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=54E47FF80BF4B).
Had the West taken a hard line against Putin after he invaded Georgia, he wouldn’t have seized Crimea. Had it imposed the kind of sanctions now in place immediately after his Anschluss of the Ukrainian peninsula, he wouldn’t have expanded his aggression into eastern Ukraine. And tragically, it appears this is not the end.
“Ukraine has been betrayed as at one time Georgia was betrayed,” Zaydman says. Not only has the West refused to live up to its responsibilities under the Budapest Memorandum, but it is apparently going to continue to refuse to provide Ukraine with the arms necessary to effectively defend itself against the hooligan Putin.
“’The conflict in Ukraine does not have a military solution,’ Chancellor Merkel and the other European leaders love to repeat as a mantra.” But they are wrong: Ukraine will have a military solution. It will be Putin’s military solution, one that the West has allowed by its inaction. And it won’t be the last one if nothing changes.
Perhaps because the prospects of that are so horrific, many believe that Putin and/or the West will change. But Putin has been remarkably consistent: he uses force whenever he thinks he can get away with it; and the West by its failure to oppose him with force has allowed him to assume he can get away with ever more of it.
Or such optimists have assumed that things will change because Putin will leave the scene or because the West will come to its senses. But there seems to be little prospect of either. An article in “Vedomosti” suggests that Putin could be in power for another 30 years, wreaking havoc on the world all that time (vedomosti.ru/opinion/news/39537941/izderzhki-pozhiznennogo-liderstva?full#cut).
And Vytautas Landsbergis, the Lithuanian leader who knows more than a little about Moscow’s willingness to engage in criminal activities when the West refuses to oppose it, suggests the current situation provides little basis for optimism and much for fear (ru.delfi.lt/news/politics/landsbergis-zapad-nastolko-glup-chto-putinu-uzhe-ne-nado-ego-durachit.d?id=67213460).
Landsbergis says that the West is now “so stupid” that Putin doesn’t have to try to “stupefy it.” Western leaders won’t even challenge Putin’s assertions that Russia isn’t a participant in the war in Ukraine, let alone do something about it. Indeed, one has to ask whether the West has already “capitulated” to him.
The West now is “afraid to respond to Russia, and if that doesn’t change,” the Lithuanian leader points out, “Russia will be able to continue to behave badly in Ukraine and later in other neighboring countries.” Indeed, he says, the West is so afraid that it doesn’t even want to impose more sanctions, let alone do something more effective.
There is a solution, he points out. “How does one overcome fear? By not being afraid. To be afraid is a defeat and a capitulation.” And Landsbergis cites the words of US President George W. Bush after the September 11 attacks: “they’ve attacked us and we must respond because if we are afraid to do so, the terrorists will win.”
