NEPTUNE – Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, the Neptune man accused of attempting to join the terrorist group ISIS, long harbored ill feelings toward the United States and planned on "defending the Islamic State," according to the federal indictment made public Tuesday.
"Born and raised in the United States, Pugh allegedly turned his back on his country and attempted to travel to Syria in order to join a terrorist organization," said Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, in announcing the indictment.
Pugh, 47, was charged in U.S. District Court in New York with attempting to provide material support to the terrorist group ISIS, also known as ISIL, and obstruction of justice. He faces a maximum of 35 years in prison. Pugh will plead not guilty his attorney Michael Schneider told CNN.

He was arrested in Asbury Park on Jan. 16 by federal authorities, and has been in custody in New York ever since. He last lived in Neptune in 2008 and had a number of addresses in Asbury Park dating back to 1993.
In a letter to his wife, and on Facebook posts, Pugh conveyed loyalty to the jihadi cause and anger toward Israel and President Obama, according to documents made public by the government.
"I am a Mujahid," Pugh said in a Jan. 5 letter to his wife, identified only as "Misha." A mujahid is one who struggles for the sake of Allah and Islam.
"I am sword against the oppressor and a shield for the oppressed," he continued. "There are only two possible outcomes for me: Victory or Martyr."
The letter, included with the indictment, was revealed in a full scan of Pugh's laptop, which was confiscated when Pugh arrived in New York from Cairo on Jan. 15. Along with the letter, according to the officials, were nearly 200 ISIS propaganda videos that show prisoners being captured and executed one by one, along with a chart featuring border crossing points between Turkey and Syria.
The chart showed specific crossings and indicated whether they were manned by Turkish officials, and which areas were controlled by ISIS.
Pugh's arrest in Asbury Park came the day after he arrived in New York, authorities said. Why Pugh was in Asbury Park was not specified by authorities.
Asbury Park Police Chief Anthony Salerno said federal officials did not inform him that Pugh was arrested in the city. Salerno said his department only received a courtesy call from the FBI around Jan. 16 saying their officers would be in Asbury Park looking for a subject.
"What they were looking for and what the actual situation was, we were not advised," Salerno said.
Salerno said there was also no indication that the community was in danger.
"I'm certain if there was a threat or a potential threat to the citizens of Asbury Park that they (federal authorities) would have let us know," he said.
Neptune Police Lt. Michael McGhee said the Neptune police are not involved with the federal investigation. The only interaction Neptune police have had with Pugh is a July 2006 arrest for a failure to appear warrant from March 2000, McGhee said. The summons was likely motor-vehicle related, McGhee said.

McGhee said Pugh's involvement with terrorism, as alleged in the indictment, is a concern for the police and community members.
"There is obviously always concern," McGhee said. "And we are vigilant to that. And that's where we implore our citizens that if they see something, say something."
Feds: Vet had terror ties
According to the indictment, Pugh has attracted government attention for more than a decade. He served in the Air Force from 1986 to 1990, working as an avionics instrument system specialist. After leaving New Jersey — his ties to the area are dated to 1993 — Pugh moved to San Antonio, Texas. In or around 1998, the government alleges, Pugh converted to Islam and grew far more radical in his beliefs.
By 2001, Pugh was working for American Airlines — one of the airlines targeted by terrorists in the 9/11 attacks. According to the indictment, the FBI was tipped off that Pugh sympathized with Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader behind the attacks. His views allegedly included statements justifying the 1998 terrorist bomb attacks on U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Nairobi were justified.
"Pugh, an American citizen and former member of our military, allegedly abandoned his allegiance to the United States and sought to provide material support to ISIL," said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin. "Identifying and bringing to justice individuals who provide or attempt to provide material support to terrorists is a key priority of the National Security Division."
In 2002, an associate of Pugh's told the FBI that he had shown interest in going to Chechnya to "fight jihad," according to the government. From October 2009 to March 2010, Pugh was employed as an Army contractor for DynCorp in Iraq, working in avionics. According to the government, Pugh had been living overseas since 2013.
Pugh was detained by Turkish authorities Jan. 10 at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. According to the indictment, Pugh claimed that he was a pilot with the U.S. Special Forces and was coming to Turkey on vacation from Egypt.
When Pugh refused to allow customs agents to search his laptop, he was denied entry into the country and sent back to Cairo. Upon arriving back in Egypt, he was detained pending deportation back to the United States.
While in custody, Pugh told agents that he was unable to find work and was simply traveling to Turkey to look for a job. Pugh had a number of electronic devices in his possession, including multiple cell phones, five USB flash drives, his laptop, and an Apple iPod. The government said he fit a profile of what terrorists are known to carry.
Upon investigation, according to the government, the laptop was discovered to have been water-damaged, the iPod's data was wiped clean and most of the flash drives has been tampered with or destroyed. A search of one of his cell phones turned up pictures of an airplane bathroom, overhead compartments, airline seats, and a machine gun.
When asked about the picture of the gun, Pugh allegedly told the authorities that he simply "liked the picture."
"The U.S. doesn't like Black Muslims"
Pugh had recently married a woman — listed as only "Misha" — while in Egypt. According to the indictment, he told Misha a number of times that he had planned to travel to Palestine and "join jihad." His Facebook pages express a number of anti-Israeli sentiments.
In his letter to Misha, he wrote of them having a home in "Al-sham" — which is what Syria was once known as — or, if he became a "martyr," they would be given much more.
"If I am made a martyr, we will have a mansion of indescribable beauty on a magnificent plot of land," Pugh wrote. "The land under a whip is worth more than the world and all it contains."
While waiting to be deported to the U.S., he told Egyptian officials to send him anywhere in the Middle East, but not back to this country.

"The U.S. does not like Black Muslims," he said. Pugh was sent back to New York from Cairo on Jan. 15. Pugh allegedly told agents that he thought he was deported from Turkey and Egypt because they assumed he was associated with ISIS.
According to the indictment, Pugh offered that he should have shaved his beard and put on pants as to avoid suspicion. After returning to Asbury Park, he was arrested the following day. He remains in custody in New York.
Federal authorities said a search of Pugh's laptop computer, found among other things, the following:
  • Recent Internet searches for "borders controlled by Islamic state;"
  • Recent Internet searches for "who controls kobani," "kobani border crossing," and "jarablus border crossing," all references to Syrian cities under ISIL's control near the Turkish border;
  • A chart of crossing points between Turkey and Syria indicating the areas on the Syrian side of the border controlled by ISIL and other groups; and
  • Internet searches for "Flames of War," an ISIL propaganda video, as well as downloaded videos, including one showing ISIL members executing prisoners.
Agents also seized and later obtained warrants to search two backpacks that Pugh had when he was overseas. Agents recovered from the backpacks, among other things: two compasses, a solar-powered flashlight, a solar-powered power source, shards of broken USB thumb drives, a fatigue jacket, and camping clothes, according to court filings.

Pugh's Facebook timeline is filled with photos of Palestinians, including children, injured or killed during Israel's 2014 bombing of Gaza. Israel had launched a military campaign in Gaza in July 2014, with Israeli leaders saying the aim was to halt rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas. The campaign ended in late August after Egypt brokered a truce between Hamas and Israel.
Another Facebook post refers to Israel as a terrorist country; others depict President Barack Obama as being controlled by Israel.
Pugh also shared a cartoon of a young boy who is missing an arm being held by a man in a black mask. "There are (cq) no land called Israel," the cartoon caption reads. "Pray for Gaza."
According to a July 27 Facebook post, Pugh harbored strong anti-Israel statements. From Pugh's Facebook page:
"I had a thought and it goes like this.
We had just finished the fasting of Ramadan. During that time the Shatans were locked up. All the evil done by man during this time was from the evil within ourselves. All the evil done by the Jews came from within themselves. On the day of Judgement full responsibility of the starving, torture, jailing and killing of innocent Muslims will rest upon there shoulders.
Allah must really hate them to give them the rope to hang themselves. They have collectively starved, tortured and killed a thousand innocent people. They had wounded thousands of people. They have destroyed the homes of thousands Muslims all during the month of Ramadan.
Dear Israelis you will burn in hell soooo long, soooo very long that those whom you have hurt will have forgotten you.
Take the time and try to imagine that. You will burn in a black flame for millions and millions and trillions of years. You will be forgotten and guess what? You will have no hope of getting out. You have deprived the Palestinians of water, your thirst will never be satisfied, you have deprived them of food, you will forever be hungry, you have deprived them of life Allah will deprive you the comfort of death. 'I feel better already'"
Attorney General Eric Holder announced a strategy Monday aimed at attempting to disrupt American extremists from joining terrorist groups, including those drawn to conflicts in Syria and Iraq. VPC
Lynch, who is awaiting a Senate vote on her nomination to be the next U.S. attorney general, credited the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), which comprises a large number of federal, state, and local agencies from the region. Lynch also thanked the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey, as well as the Asbury Park and Neptune police departments.

Europe - The mysterious fates met by Putin critics - France 24

Text by FRANCE 24
Latest update : 2015-03-07

The murder of Russian opposition figure Boris Nemtsov on Friday has once again highlighted the grim fates that have befallen several of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critics, from radiation poisoning to imprisonment.

A day after tens of thousands of people marched in Moscow to honour Nemtsov’s memory, FRANCE 24 takes a look at some of the more high-profile cases of Putin opponents who have met with cruel – and sometimes bizarre – ends.
Boris Nemtsov: Nemtsov was a leader of the Republican Party of Russia/People's Freedom Party, a liberal opposition group. He rose to prominence in 1997 after he was named deputy premier by Russia’s first post-Soviet president, Boris Yeltsin, and was once seen as a possible Yeltsin heir. But that honour went to Putin in 2000, with Nemtsov serving as a deputy MP in the State Duma, Russia’s lower house, during Putin’s first term.
As Putin tightened his grip, however, Nemtsov became a prominent anti-corruption activist and a vocal critic of Putin’s government. In February 2008, he co-authored a report entitled "What 10 Years of Putin Have Brought" that detailed how many of Putin’s friends and supporters had become billionaires under his rule while the majority of Russians suffered under growing social inequality and a failing pension system. Similar reports followed in subsequent years criticising Putin’s policies.
In a 2011 interview, Nemtsov called critics of Putin’s government “patriots”.
“I love Russia and want the best for her, so for me criticising Putin is a very patriotic activity because these people are leading Russia to ruin,” Nemtsov said in an interview republished Saturday on theMeduza news site. “Everybody who supports them, in fact, supports a regime that is destroying the country, and so they are the ones who hate Russia. And those who criticise this regime, those who fight against it, they are the patriots.”
Opposition activist Ilya Yashin told Ekho Moskvy radio that he last spoke with Nemtsov two days before his death. Yashin said Nemtsov was working on a report that alleges that the Russian “volunteers” who are fighting in eastern Ukraine are acting on direct orders from the Kremlin. Moscow denies providing material aid to the separatists.
In an interview with Russia's Sobesednik news website on February 10, Nemtsov expressed his enmity for Putin and offered a sombre prediction.
"I'm afraid Putin will kill me. I believe that he was the one who unleashed the war in the Ukraine. I couldn't dislike him more," he said.
Friends and supporters said he had received several anonymous death threats.
"Boris was worried. He said he was under threat but never wanted additional security. [He said] if they want to kill [me], they will kill [me],” Yashin said.
Nemtsov, 55, died late on February 27 after being shot in the back four times while crossing a bridge that leads to Moscow's Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin. A Ukrainian woman with him was unhurt and is now a key witness in the inquiry into his death.
Putin condemned the murder and said it could have been a contract killing. The Russian president will assume “personal responsibility" for the investigation into Nemtsov’s death, according to Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
Hours before he was killed, Nemtsov spoke on the radio to urge his fellow Russians to join him at a March 1 “anti-crisis” rally to protest against the war in Ukraine and Putin's rule.
In the wake of his death the opposition rally was re-dedicated as a march to honour Nemtsov’s memory.

Alexei Navalny: One of Putin's most prominent critics is Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption blogger and activist and the leader of the Progress Party. One of the leaders of the 2011-2012 anti-Putin protests in Moscow, the Wall Street Journal has called him “The Man Vladimir Putin fears Most”. In September 2013, he ran for the mayor of Moscow and came in second with 27% of the vote, losing to Putin appointee and incumbent Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
On the day Boris Nemtsov was killed a Moscow court upheld a 15-day jail sentence for Navalny, who is currently incarcerated. The ruling upheld a February 19 district court verdict that found him guilty of breaking the law by handing out flyers on the subway for the unauthorised March 1 “anti-crisis” opposition rally planned in Moscow. He is due to be released on March 6.
"We need to put pressure on the government to prevent political and economic crisis," Navalny told reporters, as police escorted him from the courthouse following his initial sentencing. "We all must take part in the anti-crisis march."
Navalny, 38, has been arrested and tried several times, notably in 2012 when federal authorities accused him of embezzling a state-run timber firm. He was convicted in July 2013 and sentenced to five years in a labour colony – a move that prompted thousands to protest at the Kremlin – but was released from prison a day later and placed under a travel ban until the effective date of the verdict. In October, a regional court replaced the prison term with a suspended sentence.
In February 2014 both Navalny and his brother faced charges for allegedly overcharging the Russian subsidiary of French cosmetics firm Yves Rocher and another firm and defrauding them of 51 million rubles ($1.5 million). Navalny was placed under house arrest and restricted from communicating with anyone but family.
In December, a Russian court handed Navalny a suspended prison term of 3.5 years while his brother Oleg was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, where he remains.
European Union spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said in a statement that the charges had not been substantiated and the verdict "appeared to be politically motivated".
Oleg Navalny has never been active in the Russian opposition. Navalny and his supporters have said Oleg’s prison sentence appears to be aimed at punishing Navalny himself.

Mikheil Khodorkovsky: The 2003 arrest of Mikheil Khodorkovsky, once Russian’s richest man and head of the now-defunct Yukos oil giant, came at a time when the Kremlin was looking to curtail the power of billionaire oligarchs while consolidating control over Russia’s lucrative energy industry.
Khodorkovsky was seized at gunpoint after Russian commandos stormed a Yukos chartered plane on the tarmac. He was ostensibly detained as a witness but within hours he was charged with fraud and tax evasion. Khodorkovsky was convicted in May 2005 and sentenced to serve a nine-year term at the Krasnokamensk penal colony.
Khodorkovsky was arrested just months ahead of a December 2003 parliamentary election and the March 2004 presidential election, his website notes, “thereby eliminating him from active engagement in the political arena”.
Some observers say Khodorkovsky’s real crime was breaking a tacit agreement that Russia’s emerging super-rich would restrict their activities to making money and stay out of politics. He famously angered the Kremlin by funding several opposition parties, including the Communists and the liberal Yabloko party, both fierce critics of the Putin leadership.
In March 2009 Khodorkovsky – and his Yukos partner and fellow accused, Platon Lebedev – went on trial again on new charges of embezzling oil assets worth more than $20 billion between 1998 and 2003 and laundering an additional $20 billion, in part through Yukos subsidiaries.
“The timing of the new charges, announced in February 2007, ensured that Khodorkovsky was behind bars during the December 2007 parliamentary election and the March 2008 presidential election,” his website said of the second trial.
Both men were convicted in 2010. Following a failed appeal in May of the following year, their imprisonment was extended to 2016.
Upon receiving a pardon on “humanitarian” grounds from Putin and released at the end of 2013, Khodorkovsky, 51, left Russia and has since lived in Switzerland.
In a February 28 online statement on Boris Nemtsov’s death, Khodorkovsky wrote: “They’ve murdered Boris. A hundred metres from the Kremlin. Right in the heart of a city inundated with thousands of policemen and special services personnel… Today, we all mourn.”

Alexander Litvinenko: Things took a strange turn back to the Cold War era in November 2006 with the death of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko, a specialist in counter-terrorism and organised crime. Litvinenko died in a London hospital on November 23, some three weeks after meeting with Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitri Kovtun at the luxury Millennium Hotel and drinking tea poisoned with polonium-210.
CCTV footage presented at a British inquest showed that, shortly before meeting Litvinenko, Lugovoi and Kovtun visited the hotel men’s room, where significant levels of radiation were later found. Contamination was also found in the Millennium Hotel room that Kovtun shared with another man.Traces were later found on Lugovoi and Kovtun’s seats after their British Airways flight back to Moscow.
In a letter dictated on his deathbed, Litvinenko accused Putin of ordering his murder. The Kremlin denies the claims.
Russia has also denied British requests to extradite Lugovoi and Kovtun.
Litvinenko’s troubles started after a December 1998 press conference in which Litvinenko and four other FSB officers went public with allegations that the Russian intelligence agency had links to the mafia, was plagued by widespread corruption and had ordered a hit on Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky. Litvinenko was arrested soon after. He faced charges in three subsequent criminal trials.
Acquitted in November 1999, he was re-arrested on charges that were subsequently dismissed in 2000. Later that year, he and his family were granted asylum in the United Kingdom, where he worked as a journalist and consultant for the British intelligence services.
During his time in London Litvinenko co-wrote a book financed by Berezovsky entitled “Blowing Up Russia: The Return of the KGB”, in which he accused the FSB of launching a false flag operation blaming Chechen terrorists for the 1999 apartment bombings in Russia that killed 293 people. The bombings were used as justification for the launch of the second Chechen war and helped propel then prime minister Putin to the presidency the following year.
Litvinenko, 44, had also accused Putin of ordering the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya (see below).
A new public inquiry into his death began on January 27.

Anna Politkovskaya: A journalist for Russia’s Novaya Gazeta, an independent newspaper known for its critical coverage of the Kremlin, Politkovskaya, 48, was best known for her reporting from Chechnya. A fierce opponent of the second Chechen war and of Putin, she received numerous awards for her work. Her 2004 book, "Putin’s Russia", further documented her allegations of corruption in the military and judiciary as well as the crackdown on civil liberties under Putin.
Politkovskaya was shot dead on October 7, 2006, in the lift of her apartment block. Her death garnered immediate international attention.
Five men were sentenced in June 2014 for her murder but it remains unclear who ordered the killing.
Four of the convicted men were Chechens from the same family. Rustam Makhmudov received a life sentence for firing the shots that killed Politkovskaya while his uncle, Lom-Ali Gaitukayev, was jailed for life for planning her murder. Two of Makhmudov’s brothers and a fifth accused, a former police officer, were handed sentences of between 12 and 20 years.
The judge in the case, Pavel Melyokhin, called her murder a contract killing, saying $150,000 was paid to the accused by “a person unknown”.
Politkovskaya was one of 56 journalists killed in Russia since 1992, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Six of them were journalists from Novaya Gazeta.

Boris Berezovsky: Billionaire Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky was a one-time mentor of Putin’s but fierce disputes between the two men arose after the latter first ascended to the presidency in 2000.
Berezovsky was questioned in October 2000 in connection with a corruption and fraud investigation into the Aeroflot airline, which he headed in the 1990s. Berezovsky said at the time that the inquiry was politically motivated.
Soon after his testimony he applied for political asylum in the UK, which was granted in 2003.
A Russian court sentenced him in absentia to six years in prison in November 2007 after he was found guilty of embezzling nearly 215 million roubles from Aeroflot. Berezovsky called the prosecution a "farce".
A regional court again convicted Berezovsky in absentia in 2009, this time for his alleged involvement in embezzling 140 million roubles from an auto dealership empire between 1994 and1995.
Berezovsky, 67, was found hanging from a shower rail by a black cashmere scarf at his Surrey mansion in March 2013.
Reportedly suffering from depression and facing financial troubles, it was thought that Berezovsky likely committed suicide. Police found no evidence of foul play but the coroner recorded an open verdict on his death, citing conflicting expert testimony about the way Berezovsky was found hangingand saying he could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he either took his own life or was killed.

Sergei Magnitsky: Sergei Magnitsky was an auditor at the Moscow offices of the London-based firm Hermitage Capital Management when he allegedly discovered evidence of a $230 million fraud perpetrated by Russian interior ministry and tax officials. The officials were thought to be using documents stolen in a raid on the offices of Hermitage Capital, which was one of the largest private equity firms active in Russia at the time.
After reporting his discovery to the Russian authorities, Magnitsky himself was detained in 2008 on suspicion of aiding tax evasion. Hermitage Capital founder Bill Browder, meanwhile, had his visa for Russia revoked and was deported.
Magnitsky died in detention in November 2009 at the age of 37, of acute heart failure and toxic shockcaused by untreated pancreatitis.
An investigation by Russia's presidential council for human rights found that he had been severely beaten while in custody, an allegation also made by his family.
Russia's then president Dmitry Medvedev ordered an investigation into the Magnitsky case. Several prison officials, including the deputy head of the federal prison administration, were subsequently fired over his death.
But Russian prosecutors decided to try Magnitsky post-humously for tax evasion in a case dismissed as a "circus" by his family and by Browder, who was tried in absentia. In July 2013, a Russian court found both Magnitsky and Browder guilty, sentencing Browder to nine years in prison and banning him from doing business in Russia for three years.
Browder, who is now a British citizen and based in London, successfully lobbied the US government in 2012 to adopt the "Magnitsky list", which imposes a travel ban on the Russian officials involved in the alleged fraud and prevents them from keeping assets in the United States.
Moscow retaliated by banning American couples from adopting Russian children.

Is The Yakuza Behind Caroline Kennedy Death Threats? - The Daily Beast

Reuters
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating telephoned death threats against U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy. The individual or individuals who made the calls are facing charges over “forcible obstruction of business” and “making threats.”
Authorities told The Daily Beast that the bulk of the calls were made to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo in February. They said the embassy had received similar calls targeting Alfred Magleby, the consul general based on the southern island of Okinawa, home to about half of the 50,000 U.S. troops based in Japan.
The calls to the embassy were made last month by a man who spoke English, but with a possibly Japanese accent. The reports suggested that the threats might have been part of a scheme to blackmail Kennedy or the embassy.
A police officer on background said that among many suspects they were looking at several right-wing groups in Japan backed by the yakuza, Japan’s omnipresent mafia. One group high on the lists of suspects is Daikosha, the political arm of the Inagawa-kai, Japan’s third largest yakuza organization. According to the U.S. Treasury Departement, “under the leadership of Jiro Kiyota (the supreme leader) and Kazuya Uchibori (the chairman of the board), the Inagawa-kai has become increasingly aligned with the (Japan’s largest yakuza organization) the Yamaguchi-gumi.”
Ironically, Daikosha is considered loosely connected to the Abe administration, including Hakubun Shimomura, Japan’s Minister of Education, via its supporters and members. Mr. Shimomura is in trouble for accepting a number of dubious political donations via unofficial political support groups, one of them led by an associate of the Yamaguchi-gumi. Shimomura also allegedly received cash payment from the yakuza associate as well.
Daikosha has recently been protesting and demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Abe and the repeal of the organized crime control ordinances. They have staged protests near the U.S. embassy several times.
According to several issues of the Daikosha 2012 publication, Taiko, the special advisor to the group is Kazuya Uchibori, the chairman of the Inagawa-kai, who was designated an enemy of the U.S. government by the Department of Treasury in January of 2013.
The yakuza are reputedly the world’s largest criminal organization with over 45,000 members, and are involved in transnational criminal activity, including weapons trafficking, prostitution, human trafficking, drug trafficking, fraud, and money laundering.
“When a yakuza group or extremists really targets an individual for death, they don’t send multiple warnings first. They just take action.”
On January 23, 2013 The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Jiro Kiyota, the top Inagawa-kai leader, as well as the Inagawa-kai’s second-in-command, Kazuo Uchibori, for acting for or on behalf of the Inagawa-kai.
The sanctions had some effect, according to reports by Bloomberg, “Uchibori, who is 60 or 61 years old, also had his AmEx card canceled, and American Express froze $42,575 associated with his account, including a bill payment of $41,702.”
One of the vice-chairman of Daikosha is also a former Inagawa-kai member who served time for murder. The Yamaguchi-gumi and The Inagawa-kai are connected by a pledge of brotherhood between Uchibori and a senior member of the Yamaguchi-gumi Kodokai, the ruling chapter of the Yamaguchi-gumi.
Police sources refused to reveal why this organization, Daikosha, has aroused particular interest in the Kennedy case, stating, “There are elements of the threats that only the criminal would know and this information will be used to weed out false confessions as the investigation proceeds.”
Daikosha is a registered political organization in Japan with a declared income of roughly $550,000 last year, from advertising revenue in its magazines and donations. Some advertisers appeared to be large hotels that are “Official Hotels Of Tokyo Disneyland"—although the hotels have denied paying money to the group. Since October 2011, paying money to the yakuza or its associates is a crime.
According to police sources, Daikosha’s real estimated income is closer to $6 million a year, some of it coming from extortion, with at least a fifth of it being paid to the Inagawa-kai coffers. Because it is a registered political entity and the number of former yakuza in the organization is relatively low, it is not considered officially a yakuza group and escapes many of the sanctions of “designated violent groups” under Japanese law.  Internally, the Japanese police consider it a part of the Inagawa-kai itself. While ostensibly supporting a return to an Emperor based constitution and being extremely nationalist, a large number of its members are Korean-Japanese.
The Inagawa-kai offices are located across from the Ritz Carlton Tokyo and are a few minutes from the U.S. Embassy by car.
It is not the only “anti-social” group being looked at present in the Kennedy case.
The United States Department of State Diplomatic Security Service has special agents assigned to work with the police and protect Ambassador Kennedy but the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department leads all such investigations. U.S. law enforcement officials at the embassy are not allowed to carry firearms, the police say. According to some police sources, this is not the first time that threats have been made to the Ambassador. There was a flurry of them when Ambassador Kennedy tweeted her disapproval of the annual dolphin culling in Taiji.
These kinds of cases aren't unprecedented. In September of 2011, the Tokyo Police arrested a Yamaguchi-gumi-backed right-winger, age 46, for sending a bullet to the Russian embassy with a menacing note and threatening the ambassador and embassy staff. He was angry over Russian refusal to return the northern territories to Japan. However, Japan's right wing has traditionally shown some deference to the U.S.
Japanese police officers were somewhat skeptical of the threat level. “When a yakuza group or extremists really targets an individual for death, they don’t send multiple warnings first. They just take action.”
The threats against Kennedy were made days after Mark Lippert, the U.S. envoy to South Korea, was attacked and injured by a knife-wielding assailant. South Korean police said the attacker had targeted Lippert to protest joint military drills conducted by the U.S. and South Korea.
Ambassador Kennedy is the 57-year-old daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, and took over the Tokyo post in 2013 after being nominated by President Barack Obama.

Last week, New York police arrested three Brooklyn men, immigrants from post-Soviet states Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and charged them with aiding the Islamic State (ISIL). One of the men's online postings questioned whether it is "possible to commit ourselves as dedicated martyrs while here [in the U.S.]... to shoot Obama and then get shot ourselves."
