As Hillary Clinton kicks off her second presidential campaign, here’s a look at six things to know about the front-runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination:
Reach for the stars
Growing up in Park Ridge, Ill., Clinton wanted to be an astronaut (as well as a baseball player and journalist) and at 13, wrote to NASA to inquire how to go about it. NASA’s reply: No girls allowed. “I was just crestfallen,” Clinton later recalled.

‘Goldwater girl’
The first presidential candidate Clinton volunteered for was Republican Barry Goldwater, in 1964, when she was in high school. She was a Young Republican and attended the 1968 Republican convention, though earlier in the year she’d supported anti-war Democrat Eugene McCarthy in the primaries. By 1972, there was no question about her political identity, as she worked for liberal Democrat George McGovern’s unsuccessful campaign against President Richard Nixon.
In the headlines
She was front-page news long before Bill Clinton was. Her 1969 commencement speech as a Wellesley College senior made the front page of the Boston Globe and Life magazine — because of her impromptu criticism of the previous speaker, Republican Sen. Edward Brooke, the first African American to be popularly elected senator.
Underdog
She’s a better campaigner when she’s down. In her 2008 primary run, Clinton was a stiff and distant campaigner, until she fell behind then-senator Barack Obama. Then she started talking about making history for women and helping the middle class and became a more compelling figure on the stump.
Grammy Award winner
By her own admission, Clinton cannot carry a tune. She recounts in the new epilogue to the paperback edition of Hard Choices, her memoir about her State Department tenure, that she tried to sing lullabies and old favorites to her daughter — until baby Chelsea held a finger to her mother’s lips and said, “No sing, Mommy, no sing.” But Clinton can proudly state she is a Grammy Award winner — for Best Spoken Word or Non-Musical Album in 1997 for the audio version of her book, It Takes a Village.
By the numbers
As secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, Clinton visited 112 countries and conducted 1,666 meetings with foreign leaders. She traveled 956,733 miles and ate 570 meals on the plane while spending the equivalent of 87 days in the air.

Putin Authorizes US Warplane Shootdown To Protect American Lives by The European Union Times
A new Ministry of Defense (MoD) report circulating in the Kremlin today states that President Putin has authorized the Black Sea Fleet CCB-201 Vishnya-class intelligence ship Priazovye to use all offensive/defensive measures needed to protect itself, and civilian lives, against any and all “detected” aggressive combat aircraft, including those operated by the US Air Force, in the current Yemeni combat zone.
According to this report, this extraordinary order by President Putin authorizing the potential shoot down of US military aircraft was necessitated by the refusal of Saudi Arabia to allow the evacuation of Russian citizens trapped in the Yemeni combat zone after the deliberate 1 April destruction of the Russian consulate in that nations largest city Aden by US-directed Saudi warplanes.
To the specific American warplanes placed in danger by this shootdown order, this report continues, are the US Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers that have begun daily aerial refueling of Saudi warplanesto allow continuous airstrikes upon the Yemeni people in this latest example of the Obama regimes continued unauthorized and criminal wars against nearly every nation on Earth who disagrees with them.
Upon their receiving permission to target any warplane, including those of the US Air Force, attempting to interfere with their humanitarian mission to evacuate refugees, MoD experts in this report say, the Priazovye arrived a few hours ago in southern Yemeni port of Aden where itsuccessfully boarded over 300 foreign nationals, including Americans, seeking to leave this combat zone.
Most astoundingly of these evacuated foreign nationals, however, this report states, are the large number of US citizens seeking Russian protection to save their families lives as the Obama regime has ignored the pleas of up to 4,000 American nationals who are believed to still be stranded in this war torn nation.
According to one of these US citizens trapped in Yemen, Arwa Al-Iraine, who spoke to Russian media sources about their plight, “Nobody will help us evacuate. The reply [of the US government] was an automated message that they do not have any evacuation plans. Basically we are left on our own.”
Not lost to the MoD in their report is the irony that Federation military/naval forces may have to shootdown a US Air Force warplane in order to protect the lives of these thousands of American citizens abandoned in Yemen by the Obama regime.
More seriously though, this report notes, are that The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus (ALC) on Thursday announced the filing of a lawsuit against Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter seeking US government action to evacuate these thousands of American citizens trapped in Yemen.
This lawsuit personally targets US Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter for failing to protect US citizens in Yemen and names 41 plaintiffs in the case, and estimates the total number of US citizens currently trapped in Yemen at between 3,000 and 4,000.
As to why the American people aren’t in revolt over this monstrous abandonment of thousands of their fellow citizens by the Obama regime in this most dangerous of war zones, this report concludes, is simply because their propaganda media has still failed to inform them of it.

Russian dancer Diana Vishneva pirouettes between Moscow and New York – with masseurs on speed-dial around the world. The superballerina tells Judith Mackrell about why she’s worried about the future of Russian dance and wanting to start a family
Diana Vishneva could not be mistaken for anything but a Russian ballerina, when she walks into the New York hotel where we’ve arranged to meet. A white practice tutu dangles from one elegant wrist (she’s come straight from rehearsal), and she takes her tea Russian-style – black and sweetened with spoonfuls of blueberry jam. Although she laughs a lot, and has a very public addiction to fashion, she’s clearly dedicated to her work. We do actually have a conversation about the nature of the Russian soul.
Yet, as purely Russian as Vishneva appears, she is one of the most cosmopolitan ballerinas of her generation. For over a decade she’s been a principal with both the Mariinsky Ballet in St Petersburg and American Ballet Theatre in New York, as well as jetting between numerous other companies worldwide. Two years ago, when she married her husband Konstantin, a sports agent, the complications of her performing schedule meant that the most convenient location for their wedding was Hawaii.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A Washington Post journalist detained in Iran for over eight months is accused of “espionage” and “acting against national security,” the semiofficial Fars news agency reported Sunday.
The report did not elaborate on the source of the information, but the agency is regarded as close to Iran’s hard-liners.
Iranian officials have said Jason Rezaian is facing “security” charges and that he will stand trial in the Revolutionary Court, which mainly hears cases involving security offenses.
Rezaian, along with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, and two photojournalists were detained on July 22 in Tehran. All were later released except Rezaian, who is a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen. Iran does not recognize dual nationality.
The Post, U.S. officials and Rezaian’s mother have called for his release. They could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Fars report alleged that Rezaian had obtained economic and industrial information from Iran and sold it to unnamed Americans. It also linked him to Omid Memarian, an Iranian opposition journalist based in the U.S.
“Selling Iran’s economic and industrial information at a time of sanctions is exactly like selling food to the enemy at a time of war,” Fars alleged.
Iran is under crippling sanctions over its nuclear program, which Western nations suspect is aimed at developing an atomic weapons capability. Iran insists the program is for purely peaceful purposes.
Hard-liners in Iran have claimed that Rezaian had access to sensitive information through contacts at the office of President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate.
