NEW YORK -- A transformer explosion Saturday at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in New York posed no threat to public safety, according to officials and reports.
The facility, located approximately 35 miles from midtown Manhattan, was "in safe, stable condition," plant officials said in a post on Twitter.
"All Indian Point emergency systems worked as designed; No threat to public safety at any time," plant-operator Entergy Corporation said in the Twitter message.
"No danger to community or employees at any time," the energy company said.
There were no injuries in the fire, local police told NBC New York.
Federal regulators require towns within 10 miles of nuclear power plants to have emergency plans in place for dealing with potential radiological incidents, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Last month, however, the nonprofit Disaster Accountability Project said that planning zone should be expanded to communities within 50 miles, which would include Bergen County and the bulk of northern New Jersey, according to the report.
The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the 10-mile planning zone provides appropriate protection, the newspaper reported. Officials at Entergy said the current zone "provides a robust safety margin."

A transformer fire at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, N.Y. sent plumes of black smoke into the air on Saturday and raised concerns that the foam used to extinguish the flames could pose an environmental hazard.
The fire at the plant, located 24 miles from New York City, began around 6 p.m. and was doused by the plant’s sprinkler system. It did not amount to a “nuclear emergency,” said Jerry Nappi, a spokesman for Entergy, the company that operates Indian Point. No one was injured, he added.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo called the fire “a relatively minor situation,” but said the transformer had been “badly damaged” by the flames.
Firefighters “saturated” the damaged transformer “with a special kind of foam,” said Mr. Cuomo, who voiced environmental concerns about the foam as well as oil released from the transformer during the fire.
“There is a lot of foam and a lot of oil and now we are worried about that leaking in to the Hudson River,” he said. Foam or oil could enter the river through storm drains, he said.
Mr. Cuomo said the Environmental Protection Agency would be monitoring the situation at the plant: “We are doing everything we can on that front.”
In a series of messages posted to social media, officials from the plant and its parent company said that the facility’s emergency systems responded to the fire “as designed.”
One of the plant’s two remaining nuclear reactors, Unit 3, automatically shut down because of the fire. Mr. Nappi said the unit would remain offline until the cause of the fire could be determined and the transformer could be replaced.
The plant’s second reactor, Unit 2, will continue to operate. Unit 1 was shut down in 1974.
The facility, located in Westchester County, generates over 2,000 megawatts of electricity for the New York City area. Its reactors are contained within reinforced concrete and steel walls that are between 3.5 and 4.5 feet thick.
Gustavus Gricius, 34, was driving south down the opposite bank of the Hudson River when he saw “a huge ball of black smoke” rising from the power plant across the water. He pulled over to take a picture and said the sounds and smells of the scene soon made him nervous.
“We could hear the paging system from the facility across the river, ‘This is not a drill, please be aware, this is not a drill,’ ” Mr. Gricius said. “There was an electrical, oily burning smell. Once we smelled that that’s when we were like, ‘Let’s get out of here.’ ”
Mr. Gricius said that he could hear “fire trucks and emergency vehicles coming from every direction.”
Firefighters from the Verplanck, N.Y., fire department responded. Mr. Cuomo said that he had spoken to the emergency responders and that they planned to stay on the scene throughout the night.

In Iraq, Dozens Escape in Deadly Prison Breakby webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
At least three dozen people were killed and 40 inmates escaped in a prison break north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, officials said Saturday. Iraq's Interior Ministry said six police officers and 30 prisoners were killed in the riot at the Khalis prison. But other officials put the death toll much higher, reporting 12 policemen and at least 50 inmates killed. Officials
said a fight broke out among the inmates, and when guards came to intervene, the prisoners overpowered them and took their weapons.
Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the prison break and gave their own version of events in a statement posted on jihadist websites. The group said it set off multiple explosions outside the prison in a coordinated operation with inmates on the inside. Some 30 IS members were among those who escaped, according to the statement. Iraqi officials said some of the escapees had been jailed on terrorism
charges. Jailbreaks are common in Iraq, which has spent the past year fighting an insurgency by Islamic State militants.
Also Saturday, a car bomb in Baghdadkilled at least seven people and wounded at least 14 others, according to police and other sources. News reports
indicated the attack targeted Shi'ite pilgrims. The French news
agency AFP said the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for
the car bombing. In other news, the U.S.-led coalition that's fighting Islamic State militants said it had conducted 15 airstrikes in Syria and 13 in Iraq since Friday. A statement said the airstrikes had hit 10 IS tactical units and had destroyed nine fighting positions near al-Hasakah in Syria, and had targeted sites in Iraq near Baiji, Fallujah, Tal Afar, Sinjar, Mosul and al-Assad.

Gulf Partners to Seek US Reassurances at Summitby webdesk@voanews.com (Luis Ramirez)
President Barack Obama will host a summit next week of the six Sunni-led member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council that is expected to focus on the Iran nuclear deal and Tehran’s involvement in conflicts from Yemen to Syria. For leaders of the Gulf countries, scenes of Iranian-supported Houthi rebels overrunning Yemen’s capital, Sana'a, and driving out its U.S.-backed government this year were a sign of the rising threat from Iran, and they come to the summit seeking reassurances of U.S. backing. Obama’s argument is that negotiating a nuclear arrangement with Iran will, by itself, mean security for them. “I am convinced that if this framework leads to a final, comprehensive deal, it will make our country, our allies and our world safer,” he said. But America’s partners in the Persian Gulf region are not so sure. Yousef Al Otaiba, the United Arab Emirates' ambassador to the United States, said Gulf leaders want to upgrade their security relations with Washington. "We are looking for some form of security guarantee, given the behavior of Iran in the region [and] given the rise of the extremist threat," he said. "We definitely want a stronger relationship. In the past, we have survived with a gentlemen’s agreement with the United States about security. I think today we need something in writing; we need something institutionalized.” Defense improvements While no treaty will be signed, Obama does plan to talk with the Gulf leaders about building up their defense capabilities. It’s expected there will be some movement on speeding up weapons sales, setting up a regional defense system against Iranian missiles and planning joint military exercises. But Obama said in an interview with The New York Times last month that the Sunni-led monarchies in the Gulf also must take into account another threat: the danger posed by some of their own people who are stifled by a lack of political outlets for their grievances. Obama said the biggest threat facing the Gulf Cooperation Council members may not be from Iran, but from internal dissatisfaction. Obama’s criticism of the Gulf leaders' domestic policies, coupled with his outreach to Iran, has fueled their distrust. So for the president, it is now important to make a visible show of support. Along with a dinner at the White House, the leaders will meet at Camp David, the presidential retreat in a mountain park outside Washington that traditionally has been used for intimate and historically important gatherings. Derek Chollet, a former U.S. assistant secretary of defense, said that for Obama to be with the Gulf leaders at Camp David "has a special symbolism here in the United States and around the world. So it’s an important symbol of our commitment to the region.” The United States maintains 35,000 troops in the Gulf region and, like the Gulf nations, wants to stem Iran’s destabilizing actions there. While no one expects this week's summit to resolve all distrust and disagreements, there is hope it will be a first step toward rebuilding confidence in the partnership. Setting the stage On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry met in Paris with the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council to lay the groundwork for the Washington summit. The group comprises Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. Kerry said the issues they discussed included the Iran nuclear negotiations and regional security challenges. Also Friday, more than a thousand people took to the streets in Tehran to denounce the Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen. Some also chanted anti-American slogans. The Saudi-led coalition pummeled the northwestern Yemeni province of Saada on Saturday, while elsewhere coalition airstrikes hit the capital's international airport on the 45th day of fighting against the Houthi rebels. The United States and Saudi Arabia have announced a May 12 start date for a five-day humanitarian pause in Yemen, where the Saudi-led coalition is waging an air campaign against advancing Houthi rebels. The conflict has left thousands of people in Yemen in need of basic supplies. VOA State Department correspondent Pam Dockins contributed to this report from Paris.

Egypt's Mubarak, 2 Sons, Draw Prison Sentences in Retrialby webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
An Egyptian court has sentenced former President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons to three years in prison each on corruption charges, in a retrial that could brand Mubarak as a convicted criminal four years after being driven from office. Mubarak, an autocrat who ruled Egypt for 30 years, and sons Gamal and Alaa have already spent at least three years in prison on other charges. It was not clear Saturday whether the 87-year-old former president, ousted in a 2011 uprising, would spend spend further time in jail. The case was a retrial accusing the Mubaraks of embezzling millions of dollars earmarked for the renovation of presidential palaces. Prosecutors said the money was instead used to upgrade Mubarak's private properties. A court earlier dropped murder charges against Mubarak linked to an alleged 2011 conspiracy to kill protesters in Cairo's Tahir Square at the height of Arab Spring protests that rocked North Africa and parts of the Middle East. Prosecutors have appealed that acquittal, and an appeals court is expected to rule within weeks.

With preparations being made for the massive Jade Helm 15 military training across the American Southwest — exercises that imagine conservative Texas and Utah as “hostile” and more liberal states as “permissive” — the increasingly discredited establishment media has dishonestly seized on a handful of theories and comments to attack everyone expressing concerns about the drills. It is true that some unproven and in some cases wild claims have been made by a handful of individuals online, such as the notion that closed Walmart stores are involved in a nefarious plot with authorities to detain dissidents. However, in its deceitful efforts to demonize Americans who are suspicious of the Obama administration and the unprecedented Jade Helm 15 program, the mischaracterized “mainstream” press has seized on those claims as if they represented the primary or even only concerns being expressed. In the process, it exposed itself as a propaganda machine.

Recent unrest in Baltimore may be “just the beginning,” according to one establishment voice promoting more. Virtually all Americans expect more strife and chaos in the cities this summer, according to surveys. One prominent talk show host even said America is in the midst of a “civil war.” And various agitators are encouraging more violence, looting, and unrest as a means of bringing about “change.” The establishment’s agenda, though, is "change" toward tyranny, plain and simple.
