It’s dismally apparent that some black lives matter more than others

Police shootings in the US rightly provoke enormous outrage. So where’s the outcry over the drowning of hundreds of Africans in the Mediterranean?
Following the killings of unarmed men and boys such as Trayvon MartinTamir RiceEric Garner andWalter Scott, the United States is entering what’s being called a new civil rights movement, with activists ensuring that the world now knows about the ongoing onslaught against black life.
Movements such as #BlackLivesMatter have been huge in their reach, spreading far beyond the US and capturing the imaginations of people of all colours and nationalities. In November, as many as 5,000 protesters marched in London to condemn the grand jury decision not to prosecute the police officer who shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Patrisse Cullors, one of the creators of #BlackLivesMatters, said: “We are in a historical moment where we can make great shifts inside and outside US borders to ensure that #BlackLivesMatter around the world.”
There is a far greater sense of disconnect when it comes to stories of extreme suffering in Africa

Marijuana incorporated: cannabis eases into a billion-dollar business high

Legalisation has created a ‘green rush’ as companies find success in edibles, a growing consumer base and a three-day expo at the Hilton
Four years ago Cassandra Farrington couldn’t find any venue in the country that would host her idea for a conference on the business of marijuana. This week, she hired out the Hilton Chicago, one of the city’s most famous hotels and one that has accommodated every US president since it opened in 1927.
“When we first started looking for venues, people ran screaming in the other direction when we said ‘Hey, we want to have this marijuana business conference’. They were like ‘no way, get out of here’,” Farrington said as 2,103 attendees ate lunch from white tableclothed tables at the 2015 Marijuana Business Conference & Expo. “Our first conference was at this masonic lodge in downtown Denver because it was the only place that would rent a venue to us.

‘This land is ours, All of it is ours’ – New Israeli Minister

Tzipi Hotovely gives speech to Israeli diplomats in which she says she will try to achieve global recognition for West Bank settlements.
Israel’s new deputy foreign minister on Thursday delivered a defiant message to the international community, saying that Israel owes no apologies for its policies in the Holy Land and citing religious texts to back her belief that it belongs to the Jewish people.
The speech by Tzipi Hotovely illustrated the influence of hardliners in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s new government, and the challenges he will face as he tries to persuade the world that he is serious about pursuing peace with the Palestinians.
Hotovely, 36, is among a generation of young hardliners in Netanyahu’s Likud party who support West Bank settlement construction and oppose ceding captured land to the Palestinians. Since Netanyahu has a slim one-seat majority in parliament, these lawmakers could complicate any attempt to revive peace talks.
With Netanyahu also serving as the acting foreign minister, Hotovely is currently the country’s top full-time diplomat.
In an inaugural address to Israeli diplomats, Hotovely said Israel has tried too hard to appease the world and must stand up for itself.
“We need to return to the basic truth of our rights to this country,” she said. “This land is ours. All of it is ours. We did not come here to apologize for that.”
Hotovely, an Orthodox Jew, laced her speech with Talmud commentaries in which God promised the land of Israel to the Jews. Speaking later in English, she signaled that she would try to rally global recognition for West Bank settlements, which are widely opposed.
“We expect as a matter of principle of the international community to recognize Israel’s right to build homes for Jews in their homeland, everywhere,” she said.
Hotovely will manage the ministry’s day-to-day functions, but Netanyahu will remain in charge of foreign policy.
During the recent election campaign, Netanyahu angered his western allies by saying he would not permit the establishment of a Palestinian state on his watch. On Wednesday he told the visiting EU foreign policy chief that he remains committed to a two-state solution.
Netanyahu’s spokesman, Mark Regev, declined comment on Hotovely’s speech, but said Netanyahu’s statements Wednesday reflected his policy.

Iran sends troops to help retake key Iraqi oil refinery from Isis

  • US and allies have staged 22 air strikes against Isis since Friday
  • US says it does not oppose Iranian-backed militias if under control of Baghdad
Iran has entered the fight to retake a major Iraqi oil refinery from Islamic State militants, contributing small numbers of troops – some operating artillery and other heavy weapons – in support of advancing Iraqi ground forces, US defence officials said.
The US and its allies, meanwhile, have staged 22 air strikes on Isis targets since Friday, including four near Ramadi, the city taken by the militants this week, the US military said on Saturday. Coalition forces also attacked five Isis sites in Syria between Friday and Saturday.

3,000 children enslaved in Britain after being trafficked from Vietnam

Like many Vietnamese children, Hien was brought to Britain for a life of modern slavery. He ended up in prison on cannabis offences. We report on the gangs expanding across the UK and efforts to help their victims
Hien was 10 when he arrived in Britain. He did not know where he was or where he had been. He knew only that he was here to work. Since he emerged from the back of a lorry after crossing from Calais seven years ago, his experience has been one of exploitation and misery. He has been a domestic slave, been trafficked into cannabis factories, been abused and beaten and was eventually prosecuted and sent to prison. It has been a life of terror, isolation and pain.
Hien’s story is not unique. He is one of an estimated 3,000 Vietnamese children in forced labour in the UK, used for financial gain by criminal gangs running cannabis factories, nail bars, garment factories, brothels and private homes. Charged up to £25,000 for their passage to the UK, these children collectively owe their traffickers almost £75m.

ISIS Says Could Obtain Nuclear Bomb in Less Than 12 Months

According to the latest issue of ISIL’s propaganda magazine, Islamic State jihadist group (ISIL) could obtain a nuclear weapon within 12 month.
The Islamic State jihadist group (ISIL) could obtain a nuclear weapon within 12 month, according to the latest issue of the ISIL’s propaganda magazine Dabiq.
“The Islamic State has billions of dollars in the bank, so they call on their wilayah in Pakistan to purchase a nuclear device through weapons dealers with links to corrupt officials in the region,” the article, attributed to British photojournalist John Cantlie held hostage by the ISIL for over two years, said.
Once the ISIL buys the bomb in Pakistan, according to the article, it would transport it through Lybia and Nigeria to the West.
“Drug shipments from Columbia bound for Europe pass through West Africa, so moving other types of contraband from East to West is just as possible,” the article pointed out.
Cantlie stressed that the ISIL is looking to do “something big” on the US soil and it will be more real “a year from today.”
“The more groups that pledge allegiance [to the ISIL] the more possible it becomes to pull off something truly epic,” he added.
The Islamic State has been rallying militants from across the region under its banners since it rose to prominence in Iraq and Syria in summer 2014. It now runs cells in North Africa, Yemen, Pakistan and Afghanistan
In November 2014, an affiliate of the Pakistani militant organization Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jundallah, claimed allegiance to the ISIL.
In April 2015, Nigeria’s notorious Boko Haram terrorist group also pledged allegiance to the Sunni ISIL movement and changed its name to Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Last week, the jihadist fighters from the Mali-based militant group Mourabitoun pledged allegiance to the ISIL movement.

Battlefield Gains for IS Raise Fears of Assault on Baghdad

The Islamic State group seized the last government-held border crossing to Iraq early Friday, the latest in a series of terrotorial gains for the terror group, and there are mounting fears the group could soon launch an assault on the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Now in full control of the Syrian city of Palmyra, Islamic State fighters tear down pro-government banners and portraits of President Bashar al-Assad from the walls of a gas facility on the outskirts of town. There are fears that their next target will be the spectacular ruins of the ancient city. The conquering of Palmyra was a victory for Islamic State militants' battlefield strategy, said Sajjan Gohel, International Security Director at the Asia Pacific Foundation. “They realize very quickly where they may be losing ground, like in Kobani, and then they relocate to a different part of Iraq or Syria to plot and plan a new attempt to take a city or town," Gohel said. Kurds, airstrikes The Islamic State group was driven out of Kobani in January by Kurdish forces, backed by coalition airstrikes. There was hope that defeat would be a turning point. But three months later, the terror group is celebrating twin victories – Palmyra, and the capture of Ramadi in Iraq – just 120 kilometers from the capital Baghdad. “Losing Ramadi was huge. It was a strategic loss. And the next step for ISIS at some point will be an assault on Baghdad. They may not succeed, but the point is the objective is to target Baghdad, and that is something the West has to keep in mind," Gohel said. The West – led by the United States – is supporting coalition airstrikes on Islamic State positions in Iraq and Syria. Washington said this week that strategy is being stepped up. “Our aircraft are in the air searching for ISIL targets, and they will continue to do so until Ramadi is retaken,"  U.S. State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said. But airstrikes alone will not halt the group's advance, argues Afzal Ashraf of the Royal United Services Institute. “They have an impact which only lasts a short time. Unless you can exploit that impact on the ground, then you really lose the advantage. And they’ve been learning how to avoid airstrikes," Ashraf said. Lack of coherent strategy He argued the lack of a coherent strategy means Islamic State militants are still able to recruit fighters from across the region and beyond. “Every time they make gains, more people wish to join them. Of course, measures put in place in Europe and elsewhere to restrict the flows have had an impact. But there are still many people who succeed in going to join them," Ashraf said. The Islamic State group is different from previous Islamist terror groups like al-Qaida – and that is at the root of its resilience, Gohel said. “This is not just a terrorist outfit. It’s a criminal enterprise. It’s effectively operating as a militia. They have resources on the ground, they have troop numbers, and they have the ability to fund their activities," he said. "Unless you have effective ground troop operations against ISIS, they will continue to spread their tentacles across Iraq and Syria, and worryingly even beyond that.” From Pakistan to Nigeria, terror groups have adopted the Islamic State brand. Analysts said that with each victory on the battlefield, the group’s propaganda grows stronger.

Both Sides Say Irish Voters Approve Gay Marriage

Ireland has voted resoundingly to legalize gay marriage in the world's first national vote on the issue, leaders on both sides of the Irish referendum declared Saturday even as official ballot counting continued. "I'm so proud to be Irish today," Ireland's Equality Minister Aodhan O'Riordain said earlier Saturday, predicting his country had voted in favor of allowing same-sex marriage in a historic referendum in the traditionally Catholic country. Senior figures from the "no" campaign, who sought to prevent Ireland's constitution from being amended to permit same-sex marriages, say the only question is how large the "yes" side's margin of victory will be from Friday's vote. Official results Final results are expected later Saturday, but all indications are the "yes" vote won overwhelmingly. Such a dramatic social shift in Ireland comes two decades after the country decriminalized homosexuality."We're the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality. So it's a very proud day to be Irish," Leo Varadkar, a Cabinet minister who came out as gay at the start of a government-led effort to amend Ireland's conservative Catholic constitution, told The Associated Press. "There is going to be a very substantial majority for a yes vote. I'm not at all surprised by that to be honest with you," Irish Sen. Ronan Mullen, one of only a handful of politicians who campaigned for rejection, told the AP. “This has really touched a nerve in Ireland,” Equality Minister Aodhan O'Riordain told Reuters at the main count center in Dublin. “It's a very strong message to every LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) young person in Ireland and every LGBT young person in the world.” Political analyst Noel Whelan noted that "yes" majorities were being reported even in conservative rural districts and suggested the only question was how large the "yes" majority would be when all ballots in this predominantly Catholic nation of 4.6 million are counted. The predicted "yes" outcome is due, in part, to thousands of young Irish voters who returned home from abroad to cast their votes. Walter Jayawardene of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, and "Yes" campaign team spokesman, said, "It suggests that there has been a groundswell of enthusiasm for this referendum, particularly amongst new voters and amongst young people, something that you don't usually see in Irish referendums where there is usually quite a low turnout. "The enthusiasm with the campaign has been very, very high, and that seems to be translating in the polls, which is great," Jayawardene added. 'Sense of excitement' Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton of the Fine Gael Party said, "I think, as you can see here today, there is great buzz here. I think there is a great sense of excitement. I think this is a historic decision that people have been asked to make. The turnout has been very high and I think that gives optimism to the 'yes' side." Emigrant voter Oonagh Murphy said, "It feels really exciting to travel home with a group of people who, not only see a 'yes' vote as necessary, but they almost believe the questions would be irrelevant – the question about gender and sexuality." Fellow emigrant voter Joey Kavanagh said, "The hashtag 'HomeToVote' has been trending worldwide. People at home seem very inspired and encouraged by the fact that people are going to such great lengths to come home and vote." The conservative Roman Catholic Church is a dominant force in Ireland, and many clergy have expressed opposition to a constitutional change. The secular Irish government, on the other hand, supports it. Homosexuality was not decriminalized in Ireland until 1993. And neighboring Northern Ireland, which is under British rule, has not joined the rest of the United Kingdom in legalizing gay marriage. In Europe, gay marriage is legal in more than a dozen countries. It has also been legalized in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Uruguay. Some material for this report came from AP and Reuters.
