Stock Market: Dow Plunges 530 Points and More Than 1,000 for the Week

Stocks were clobbered Friday on Wall Street — a brutal finish to the worst week in the market in four years. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 530 points, the ninth-biggest point decline in its history.
Investors worried about signs of a slowdown in the Chinese economy that could hammer companies and countries around the world. The stock of Apple, which depends heavily on demand from China, fell more than 6 percent.
The Dow finished at 16,459. It fell more than 1,000 points this week alone and is down more than 10 percent from its all-time high in May — the definition of a market correction. That has not happened in four years.
The Dow's decline for the day came to 3.1 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index, a broader gauge of the stock market, finished down 3.2 percent and closed below 2,000 for the first time since early this year.
"Right now there is a feeling of fear in the marketplace, and all news is interpreted negatively and it's interpreted indiscriminately," Tom Digenan, the head of U.S. equities at UBS Global Asset Management, told CNBC.
In percentage terms, the decline on Friday was nowhere close to the worst of all time. On Black Monday in 1987, when the Dow fell 508 points, it represented a 22 percent decline.
The damage on Friday wasn't limited to Apple. John Deere stock fell more than 8 percent and Microsoft more than 5 percent. Energy stocks and technology stocks were hammered across the board.
Utility stocks, seen as a relatively stable bet in a rough market, fared the best, but even they were down more than 1 percent.
There was some good news in the sell-off: The price of crude oil plunged below $40 a barrel for the first time since the financial crisis in 2009. Gas has already fallen to a nationwide average of $2.63 a gallon — 80 cents lower than a year ago.
Stocks began falling last week when China announced that it was devaluing its currency, the yuan. Investors took it as a signal that the slowdown in the Chinese economy, the second-largest in the world, is worse than they had thought.
They got more evidence on Friday: A reading of business activity in China known as the Caixin purchasing index fell to 47.1. Anything below 50 suggests business activity is shrinking.
"China has been on a mission to keep up the illusion of a gradual slowdown, but dealers aren't buying it anymore," David Madden, a market analyst at the financial company IG, told The Associated Press.
The punishment for investors was global. Earlier in the day, the Shanghai stock market fell 4.3 percent, and the Nikkei index in Japan tumbled 3 percent to its lowest level in six weeks. European stocks fell more than 3 percent.
Robert Shiller, a Nobel Prize-winning economist who has warned for months that the market was overheated, told CNBC that "even bigger and bigger moves" could be in the offing.
He said he was confident that the Chinese economy would grow and said that the American housing market "has been going up at a good clip." But he warned that the market sell-off could spiral.
"When people who don't normally pay attention to the market are brought in," he told CNBC, "it can feed on itself like an epidemic."

Dow Jones sinks more than 500 points on China growth fears - Americas - World

The London blue-chip index fell for the ninth consecutive day – its longest losing streak also since 2011 – by 2.8 per cent, or 180.24 points, to 6,187.65.  The FTSE has fallen by 5.8 per cent since the start of the year and is now 13 per cent off its peak of 7,122.74 on 27 April. Two more sessions in the red and it will be the worst streak since January 2003, when the Footsie fell for 11 straight days.
The ugly end of trading numbers for the Dow represented a full 10 per cent from its peak. It means that the American leading index is now officially suffering a correction.
“Global markets are in panic mode as the full scale of China’s slowdown becomes clearer,” said Angus Nicholson, market analyst at IG Index. “The word on everyone’s lips is deflation – poison for equity markets. The phenomenal six-year bull market may finally meet its match in China-induced global deflation.”
Selling was sparked by data released yesterday showing that activity in Chinese factories dropped sharply last month. The private Caixin/Markit manufacturing purchasing managers’ index – where a figure below 50 indicates contraction – declined to 47.1 from 47.8 in July.
The Shanghai Composite index gave up almost all its recent gains in response, closing 4 per cent lower, while the largest market in Asia – Japan’s Nikkei – ended down 3 per cent.
Fears over China took also their toll on commodities, with Brent crude falling $1.28, or 2.75 per cent, to $45.33 per barrel by late afternoon.
In Paris, the CAC 40 ended down 3.2 per cent, while the Frankfurt, Milan and Madrid exchanges all dropped by  nearly 3 per cent.
One of the big factors weighing on American markets was the smartphone giant Apple, which shed more than $27bn (£17bn) in value on concerns over demand from China, which is now the world’s largest smartphone market.
The FTSE 100 has been dragged down by commodity and energy stocks such as Glencore, Shell and Rio Tinto, which together make up 20 percent of the index.
Since shares started falling on 11 August, the FTSE has lost 548.57 points, wiping more than £140bn off the value of the country’s top stocks.
In a sea of red on trading screens, Royal Mail was the only blue-chip riser yesterday.
Many traders are away on holiday, which has resulted in lower trading volumes than normal and provided little in the way of support to stem the decline.
Nigel Green, chief executive of the wealth manager de Vere said: “This volatility is likely to remain with us, at least until the end of the year.  By then, we will have a clearer view as to the risk of a China economic ‘hard landing’, and the degree to which capital markets are prepared to absorb higher American  interest rates.”

'They're in Everything': California Bug Outbreak Irks Towns

The gas station's ground was covered with the small winged bugs. Piles of carcasses, inches deep, sat swept to the sides.
On the road, they rained onto car windshields. They flew by the thousands toward even the smallest sources of light, and crept along windows and kitchen tables.
Such has been the skin-crawling reality for the past two months in the high-desert communities at the foot of the Sierra Nevada's eastern slopes, where residents have seen an explosion of the black-and-red seed bug species Melacoryphus lateralis.
"They're in everything. There's no way to get rid of them or eradicate them. They're just here," said Blair Nicodemus, 33, of Lone Pine, while driving with a bug creeping on his windshield. "Sometimes there will be these micro-plumes that'll come through where there will be just thousands of them, and they'll be all over you. ... I'm sure I've eaten at least two dozen, because they get into your food."
Such outbreaks have happened in Arizona's Sonoran desert near Tucson, but scientists say it's the first one in recent memory in California.
The influx has been driven by a mild winter and monsoonal weather, which provided healthier vegetation for the nutrient-sucking bugs, said David Haviland, an entomologist with the University of California Cooperative Extension in Kern County.
The bugs' flight into town and toward the lights in homes, businesses or cars, however, might be related to the drying up of native vegetation in the summer heat and the drought, said Nathan Reade, agricultural commissioner for Inyo and Mono counties.
The fingernail-sized insects are the main topic of conversation in the area.
A printout in a hotel lobby in a Lone Pine motel warned people to keep their doors shut at night, and a hotel worker advised people to keep their car windows up if lights are on. A Dollar General Store in Inyokern limited its store hours after dark to avoid dealing with the bugs.
Lia Sensanbaugh of Inyokern doesn't turn on her lights when at home. "I've got them real bad," she said. "I've been living off my TV light for about a month and a half."
Gas stations and rest areas along Highway 395 — a roadway that crosses through sparsely populated and rural areas — are prime bug targets because of their lights. After dark, the bugs swirl like surreal artwork below the Pearsonville Shell gas station's overhead lights.
"Millions, tens, twenty, we can't count it," gas station owner Soma Praba said. "At night time, if you go into the station, they'll follow. They go everywhere. They get on your body, your head."
Each morning Praba's workers have spent three hours sweeping the ground and using a leaf blower to clear away piles of the bugs. Around eight times a day, workers will sweep, discovering two hours later that the same amount of bugs are back, Praba said with frustration.
Spraying insecticide hasn't helped, Praba said, and exterminators have been equally stymied. The only reprieve seems to be a windy day and the recent smoke from fires.
"We are tired of it," Praba said. "I am waiting for the first snow to come."
At a Lone Pine gas station this week, the side of the building was covered with bugs, and a woman was hosing off the wall, despite the drought, said Kathi Hall, who owns the town's Mt. Whitney Restaurant with her husband.
Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden said some people in town use umbrellas while getting gas because of the swarms overhead. She's fielded many dozens of concerned calls and never seen anything like this in her 33 years there.
She put together a notice this week to post around town explaining to visitors that the bugs are a harmless nuisance in the hopes that they'll return when the bugs die down.
That said, Breeden joked, "If frogs come, we're all leaving."

Russia: Massive Capital Flight Continues | Business

KremlinRussian President Vladimir Putin meets with regional governors, financial analysts, and Central Bank leaders to discuss the country’s economy and government finances.
This article was originally published by EurasiaNet.org
Amid Russia's economic woes, billions of dollars continue to disappear in offshore havens. The net outflow of capital from Russia reached $32.6 billion during the first quarter of 2015, according to the nation's Central Bank.
The bank is now forecasting that capital flight may reach $131 billion by the end of the year. In reporting first quarter numbers, the Central Bank also upwardly revised the 2014 figure for net capital outflow to $154.1 billion from the previously reported $151.5 billion. That figure marks the highest annual total of capital flight since the Central Bank started tracking the trend back in 1994.
Financial experts say most of the money now fleeing Russia ends up in offshore accounts, beyond the reach of tax inspectors and other prying eyes. The budgetary implications for Russia are significant: according to Andrei Makarov, chairman of the Russian Duma's Committee on Budget and Taxation, back in 2013, when the capital flight rate was dramatically lower than it is now, capital flight cost the Russian treasury at least $22 billion in lost tax revenue.
"Capital outflow abroad leads to losses that are at least comparable to internal tax revenue losses," state-owned news channel Russia 24 reported, citing data from KPMG, a large international audit, tax and advisory firm.
The problem is not limited to tax revenue losses. "Capital flight weakens the national economy, starving it of investment funding, which further worsens the economy's development prospects," wrote economists Mikhail Gelvanovskiy and Vladislav Ovchinskiy in an academic paper that examined the economic damage done by capital flight amid the 2008 economic crisis.
Investment activity in Russia during the first quarter of 2015 dropped by more than 20 percent compared with the same period the previous year, according to the Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-Term Forecasts (CMASF). Representatives of the Economic Development Ministry sought to allay concerns, contending that the overall decrease in investment is projected to be 10.6 percent in 2015. Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev also has claimed that investment would grow by as much as 3 percent in 2016, driven mainly by private investors. He provided no specifics about possible government measures to attract private investment.
Another sign that the Russian economy is being starved of capital is the sharp increase in bankruptcies. According to CMASF, the overall number of bankruptcies in the first quarter of 2015 reached levels last seen during the previous crisis in 2008-2009. Among major companies in industry and agriculture, the rate has exceeded that of the previous crisis. The hardest hit economic sectors are housing and construction, transport, communications, trade, power industry and metallurgy.
The flight total for the first quarter of 2015, $32.6 billion, is substantially lower than the same quarter last year ($47.7 billion). But experts point out that the first quarter of 2014 saw Russia's forced annexation of Crimea and the first steps toward the introduction of Western sanctions, two developments that sparked a panicked reaction among Russia's monied class. A better indicator for how 2015 is comparing to last year, in terms of the capital flight rate, will be the second quarter. In 2014, the second-quarter capital flight figure fell to $21.9 billion.
Analysts predict capital flight will not stabilize anytime soon. "Capital outflow can only be stopped if the general population and businesses' confidence in Russia's stability is regained," Mikhail Zadornov, head of VTB 24, one of Russia's largest banks, told the Interfax news agency.
Both Zadornov and other experts contend that bolstering confidence in Russia's political and financial system are long shots over the near- and medium-term: There are no indications that the Kremlin will change its current political course, specifically its aggressive stance toward Ukraine. And at home, the government likewise shows no inclination to address the issues of pervasive corruption and arbitrariness in dealing with the business community.
Russian Central Bank representatives say the price of oil could have a significant impact on capital flight in 2015: If prices go below the present level, capital flight is projected to top $130 billion. If energy prices rise, the capital flight figure could drop to about $111 billion. Even if the figure ends up in the lower range, 2015's capital flight figure would still be the third highest annual total since 1994.
According to government statistics, Russia has suffered a total net capital outflow of about $550 billion since President Vladimir Putin gained power in 1999, hemorrhaging money every year except in 2006 and 2007. Independent researchers suggest that the government figures underestimate the problem, and assert the actual total may be higher than $1 trillion.

Brain Drain Worsens as Exodus of Russian Scientists Gathers Pace | News

The exodus of Russian scientists has picked up pace during the last 18 months, the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Rossia-24 television channel Tuesday.
Vladimir Fortov, a physicist who has headed the academy since 2013, attributed the increase in scientists leaving Russia to more lucrative salaries offered abroad, a lure that has become stronger following the ruble's recent plummet in value.
The ongoing brain drain has not yet resulted in a shortage of specialists, Fortov said, adding that Russia excels in the fields of theoretical physics, mathematics, energy, engineering and mechanics.
Since the beginning of Putin's third term in May 2012, the number of Russians emigrating — many of them skilled professionals — has soared.
According to state statistics bureau Rosstat, 186,382 Russians moved abroad in 2013, compared with 36,774 in 2011. Experts indicate the actual figures may be higher.
