Self-Publishing Taking Off in Russia

Paul Goble

Staunton, February 26 – Some three million Russians want to self-publish their books, according to Elena Gorelova in today’s “Vedomosti;” and an entire industry is emerging to help them do so, creating yet another means for Russians to reach out to one another largely bypassing the restrictions being imposed by the state.

The Internet plays many of the roles that samizdat did in late Soviet times, but most posts on it are relatively short and thus do not lend themselves to the easy dissemination of larger works or the reproduction of these works in hard copy either for broader dissemination or more permanent holdings.

But those who have prepared such works seldom can find publishers who will handle them given the rising costs of paper and printing, the declining purchasing power of Russian consumers and institutions, and editorial concerns about quality or even getting in trouble with the authorities.

Consequently, Russians are beginning to do what many in the West are already doing: turning to “the services of electronic samizdat” which include firms that format, publish and sell the works of such authors (vedomosti.ru/management/articles/2016/02/26/631462-biznes-na-grafomanah).

Among the largest of these firms is Ridero.ru, which has offices in Yekaterinburg and Cracow, but many more are getting involved, Gorelova says. “There are approximately 29,000” self-published authors in Russia now thanks to Ridero, and their numbers are increasing by approximately 200 a day.

Once a Russian has prepared a manuscript in an electronic format, she says, he can get it published following about 20 minutes of conversation with Ridero.  Writers are required to sign an agreement specifying that there is nothing that denigrates the president, propagandizes suicide among children “and other prohibited themes.”

The company may then produce a few copies for the writer or support its sale on various Internet platforms, although the evidence so far is that few of these self-published authors see their works attracting many purchasers or get much income from sales. Most get less than a 100 US dollars a quarter, of which they must give 20 percent to the publisher.

Many of those who turn to such services only want copies for themselves, their families and friends – typical charges for four copies of a 200-page paperback are 6800 rubles (100 US dollars) – but others hope for large sales.  And occasionally, Ridero says, it attracts a star writer who makes money for the company and the author as well.

Feds Flag Thousands of Illegal Bernie Sanders Contributions

Thousands of contributions to Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ campaign in January violated federal campaign finance laws, election regulators said on Thursday.
The Federal Election Commission sent a letter to the Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign committee on Thursday with a 90-page spreadsheet listing 3,457 “excessive, prohibited, and impermissible contributions.”
The campaign’s January financial disclosure filing listed contributions from foreign nationals and unregistered political committees, the FEC said. Other contributions came from donors who exceeded the $2,700 per-election limit.
“Although the Commission may take further legal action concerning the acceptance of [excessive or prohibited] contributions, your prompt action to refund the prohibited amount will be taken into consideration,” the FEC told the campaign.
Sanders’ campaign has relied on small-dollar individual contributions to a far greater extent than any other presidential campaign, including the Super PAC- and dark money-fueled efforts of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
The Vermont Senator and self-described socialist is running on a platform of transparency and campaign finance reform, contrasting his grassroots support with Clinton’s high-dollar donors and use of loopholes in federal election laws that allow her campaign to coordinate with outside groups that can accept unlimited contributions.
However, Sanders’ donors have also run afoul of federal campaign finance laws, and his financial disclosure reports have been riddled with errors.
The FEC sent a letter to the Sanders campaign earlier this month flagging an additional 1,316 “excessive, prohibited, and impermissible contributions” in the fourth quarter of 2015.
The commission also noted disbursements from the campaign that failed to include required documentation.
The Sanders campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Some of the campaign’s legal problems stem from enthusiasm for Sanders’ candidacy from foreign nationals, many of whom have publicly revealed donations to the campaign in violation of U.S. election laws.
“I am German, live in Germany and just donated to Bernie Sanders’ campaign on www.BernieSanders.com simply using my credit card—Is this illegal in any way?” asked a user on the website Quora.
“UPDATE: Donation rescinded based on your answers,” the user later added.

Europe in Turmoil as Leaders Struggle to Control Migrant Situation

The European Union could be on the cusp of a massive humanitarian catastrophe as leaders stumble in their efforts to regulate the flow of migrants crossing its borders from the Mediterranean Sea.
“The possibility of a humanitarian crisis of a large scale is there and very real,” Dimitris Avramopoulos, the E.U. commissioner responsible for immigration issues, told the Guardian.
The crucible of the conflict is Greece, which has been a primary waypoint for the hundreds of thousands of migrants who have made their way to Europe from the Middle East in the past year. Fleets of ferries carrying groups of asylum seekers continue to arrive at Greek ports, but in recent weeks the country’s northern neighbor Macedonia has enacted stringent immigration policies, demanding travel documents from potential immigrants and banning Afghans from entering the country. The closure has left thousands of people stranded at Greece’s northern borders.
Tensions are now flaring between Athens and Vienna, which has led the initiative to stymie the passage of migrants from Greece into the rest of Europe, the BBC reports. On Thursday, Greece withdrew its ambassador to the country after Austrian leaders declined to invite Greek officials to a summit with Balkan nations on the crisis.
E.U. officials have turned their attention to Turkey, the origin point for most of the migrants and refugees who enter Greece by sea. Reuters reports that if Turkey does not demonstrably tighten its borders by the end of the first week in March, the E.U. will suspend its Schengen free-passagepolicy, which allows those inside E.U. boundaries to travel across internal borders without going through passport checks.

Coming Weeks Will Be ‘Critical’ to Syria’s Future, Obama Says

The next few weeks, including a two-week cease-fire set to begin on Friday, will be “critical” to Syria’s future, according to President Obama.
Obama said the truce would only succeed if all parties, including the Syrian government and Russia, adhered to the terms of the agreement and ceased all hostilities in the war-torn region, reports the BBC.
“The world will be watching,” he added.
Obama acknowledged that violence in the country would not immediately cease because of rivalry between rebel groups and the ongoing effort to eradicate the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) extremist group.
“More people are realizing that [ISIS] is not a caliphate, it’s a crime ring. They are not winning over hearts and minds, they are under pressure,” he said.
The main opposition umbrella group representing rebels trying to depose Syrian President BasharAssad has accepted the two-week truce, as has a northern Kurdish militia called the Popular Protection Units, also known as YPG, although the latter said it would retaliate against any attacks.
The High Negotiations Committee, however, has expressed apprehension that Russian and Syrian forces would continue air strikes against rebel allies of Jabhat al-Nusra, a militant group affiliated with al-Qaeda that, along with ISIS, will be excluded from the cease-fire.
