The daughter of infamous drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman said her father visited her twice in California while he was a fugitive, according to an interview released Friday.
Rosa Isela Guzman Ortiz, who lives in California in a house her father helped her buy, said in the July 2015 interview with the Guardian, published on Friday, that her father visited her in the U.S. twice, even though he was wanted by both Mexican and U.S. authorities.
Asked about how he managed to cross the border, she said she wondered the same.
“I asked him the same, believe me,” Guzman Ortiz said.
El Chapo, known as “the most powerful drug lord in the world,” escaped a high-security prison in July 2015, tunneling from his shower to a nearby field. He was recaptured in a raid in January.
Guzman Ortiz—who runs a chain of carwashes, beauty salons and cafes in California—also defended her father against criminal accusations, saying he has been unfairly targeted by the Mexican government.
“My dad is not a criminal. The government is guilty,” she said.

The United Nations human rights office says civilian casualties are mounting in conflict-ridden Yemen. The new reports also says more than 3,000 men, women and children have been killed and nearly 6,000 wounded since the Saudi-led coalition began its bombing campaign against the Houthi rebels nearly one year ago. This report is replete with alarming statistics. The U.N. human rights office only deals with civilian casualties. It agrees the numbers would be much higher were the deaths and injuries of fighters included. During February, the agency recorded a total of at least 168 civilians killed and nearly 200 wounded. It said around two-thirds of these casualties were a result of Saudi-led coalition airstrikes. Human rights office spokesman Rupert Colville said the largest numbers were in the capital, Sana’a. “In November last year, there was a marked decrease in the airstrike casualties, but since then they have again risen sharply with the number killed almost doubling between January and February," he said. "And, the number of civilian casualties recorded last month was, in fact, the highest since September.” Colville sad fighting and indiscriminate shelling by local fighters in the Popular Committees group affiliated with the Houthis and allied army units loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh are adding to the casualty figures. He said last month, the Popular Committees killed and wounded dozens of civilians in the cities of Taizz, Ibb and Al Jawf. He said civilian infrastructure continued to be destroyed or damaged in February. He accused both warring parties of deliberately targeting protected civilian sites. “There have also been worrying allegations — which we are still working to verify — that coalition forces dropped cluster bombs on a mountainous area to the south of the Amran cement factory, where a military unit loyal to the Houthis appears to have been the target,” said Colville. Cluster munitions are inherently indiscriminate in nature. Children are major victims of these weapons. They are attracted to their small, shiny appearance and play with them, often with fatal consequences. Human Rights Watch says the deliberate or reckless use of cluster munitions in populated areas amounts to a war crime.

LA Police Testing Knife Reportedly Found at OJ Simpson’s Former Estate by webdesk@voanews.com (VOA News)
A knife that was reported to have been found years ago at the Los Angeles estate of one-time American football star and former murder suspect O.J. Simpson might be a weapon used in a 1994 double murder case that transfixed the country. According to entertainment website TMZ, which first reported the story, the knife was discovered in 1998 buried at the perimeter of Simpson’s former estate by a construction worker who was helping demolish the estate. TMZ reports that the worker gave the knife to a police officer who was off duty and who never turned the knife in to authorities. After retirement, that officer reportedly mentioned the knife to a co-worker. That person relayed the information to their superiors who demanded the officer turn over the knife. The knife, which has been described as a folding buck knife, is reportedly very rusty and stained. According to TMZ, there are signs of blood stains on the knife, which is now undergoing analysis for DNA and other residue by Los Angeles police.

The Israeli Intelligence Heritage and Commemoration Center (IICC) is a nonprofit institution in Tel Aviv, founded in 1985 by Meir Amit, former head of both Israeli military intelligence and the Mossad. The IICC seeks to further public knowledge of lsrael’s intelligence support to national security. It operates a website, high-tech library, information center, museum, and newsletter. And now it has sponsored this book on the Israeli intelligence community.
In the introduction by the current IICC chairman, Efraim Halevy, also a former director of the Mossad, readers are warned that for security reasons, many operations are not included or even mentioned.
Nevertheless, the editors have assembled 36 firsthand accounts of intelligence operations that span the 60-year history of the three principal Israeli intelligence services—the military intelligence branch of the Israeli Defense Force, often called Aman (identified here as Israeli Defense Intelligence, or IDI); the security service, called Shabak or Shin Bet (referred to in this book as Israel Security Agency, or ISA); and the foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, whose name is the Hebrew word for “institute.”
The contributions are divided into six sections. In the first, the heads of the three services describe their missions. Section two tells how and why each branch was formed. The third section deals with operations, both successful and failed. Examples of the former include the attack on Iraq’s nuclear reactor in 1981, the Entebbe rescue raid in 1976; and intelligence preparations for the Six Day War. Operation SUZANNA, or the Lavon Affair, is an example of a covert action gone wrong, and its political consequence is explained.[2]
Section four depicts intelligence challenges in various geographic areas of the Middle East, with emphasis on terrorism and the Iranian nuclear threat. Of particular interest is the chapter on how terrorist organizations influence believers to support aggression. Section five gives a brief tutorial on principal intelligence functions and the roles of the military services. The final section, “The Dynamics of Israeli Intelligence Activity,” includes a substantial article on the Mossad by Halevy.
There are also chapters on the operational demands put on the services, the relationships between decisionmakers and the services, and the Revision Department. This department; also known as the Devil’s Advocate Department, may be unique to the Israeli intelligence community. It analyzes current operational plans with an eye toward avoiding past mistakes. The final chapter considers problems that can result from collective thinking. The author encourages open discussion of decisions made by persons “at the top of the pyramid.” (p. 316) There are also three appendices. The first is a chronology of key events and the leaders involved, the second contains brief summaries of operations not covered elsewhere, and the third lists the heads of the intelligence services from their origins to the present. The photographs, in color and black and white, illustrate important buildings, people, and events in Israel’s intelligence history. Altogether, Israel’s Silent Defender provides a fine summary of the origins and present-day configuration of Israel’s intelligence community.

Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration think they may have spotted a new species of octopus. The discovery came February 27 off Neckler Island in the Hawaiian Archipelago, in water over 4,000 meters deep, during the first dive of 2016 by NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer. While exploring the area, Okeanos’ remotely-operated vehicle, Deep Discoverer, spotted the deep-sea octopod perched on a flat rock some 4,290 meters deep. According to NOAA, “the appearance of this animal was unlike any published records and was the deepest observation ever for this type of cephalopod.” There are two types of deep-sea octopii. First is the “cirrate” or finned type, which have fins on their sides and “fingerlike cirri associated with the suckers on their arms.” The second type are called “incirrate” which lack the fins and cirri. The white octopod falls into the second group, NOAA said, adding that its suckers were “in one, rather than two, series on each arm.” Also, it lacked pigment cells and “did not seem very muscular.” NOAA described the creature as having a “ghostlike appearance,” leading some to call it Casper, after the friendly ghost of cartoon fame. “It is almost certainly an undescribed species and may not belong to any described genus,” said NOAA. The Okeanos Explorer is a U.S. government-funded ship that explores the world’s oceans. Here's a video of the creature:

The World Health Organization reports evidence is accumulating of a causal link between the Zika virus and two neurological disorders - microcephaly, which causes brain abnormalities in newborn babies - and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, which can result in paralysis. The latest update shows 47 countries reporting transmission of the Zika virus. Of those, nine countries, mainly in Latin America, are reporting a potential association between the Zika virus infection and cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The WHO says Brazil is still the only country where it is proven that women infected with the Zika virus have given birth to babies with microcephaly. It says a linkage is suspected in 641 cases. Bruce Aylward, the WHO's executive director for outbreaks and health emergencies, says a study from French Polynesia presents the most compelling evidence to date linking Guillain-Barre Syndrome with the Zika virus. Aylward says scientists have studied cases which occurred in 2013 and 2014. “What they found was 100 percent of the people that had Guillain-Barre had evidence of infection and then …that again is the strongest evidence so far that this may be a causal relationship," he said. Guillain-Barre Syndrome can cause a rapid onset of paralysis, usually involving the lower limbs, so people are unable to walk. The neurological disorder progresses very rapidly, but the majority of people recover. Aylward says the risk of contracting Guillain-Barre is very low, with about one in 5,000 people becoming sick. WATCH: Research on Zika cure He says a recent report from the U.S.-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides more evidence of a possible causal link between Zika and microcephaly. He says the CDC has been following the cases of nine pregnant women who became infected while traveling. Aylward says three of the nine pregnant women have given birth to babies with microcephaly, adding to the accumulating body of evidence linking Zika to the brain disorder.
