Denmark will do everything it can to protect Jews, said its Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt to reporters Monday. But across town, the thousands of bouquets that had been laid at the gates of a synagogue where a gunman killed a Jewish man at the weekend were a painful reminder that they hadn’t been protected enough. Here and across Europe, the attack added to a growing fear among Jews that the continent was once again not safe for them.
About 80 people were celebrating a bar mitzvah at the synagogue on the central Copenhagen street of Krystalgade in the early hours of Feb. 15 when Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussain shot and killed synagogue member Dan Uzan, who was guarding the entrance to the building. Earlier El-Hussainhad killed one and injured three at a meeting on freedom of expression organized by Lars Vilks, a cartoonist who had depicted the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.
Coming so soon after a similar attack in Paris, in which two gunmen killed cartoonists and editors at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, while another killed five in two other incidents, the Copenhagen events have sharply undermined the small Danish Jewish community’s already deteriorating sense of security.
“It’s terrifying,” says Marianne Isaksen, a member of the congregation where Dan Uzan was killed. She and her husband Alf, both in their 70s, knew Uzan, and had come out to Krystalgade to commiserate with other synagogue members and pay their respects. “We knew things were getting worse, but we never thought it could happen here.”
And yet increasingly, it does happen throughout Europe. Across the continent, anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise. On Sunday, hundreds of Jewish tombs were desecrated in the town of Sarre-Union in Eastern France. Last July during the Gaza war, eight French synagogues were vandalized or petrol bombed among many other similar incidents across Europe.
Many Jews do not consider themselves safe in Europe. A 2013 survey of Jewish communities in eight European Union states (Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Sweden and the U.K.) carried out by the E.U.’s Fundamental Rights Agency found that over three-quarters of respondents believed anti-Semitism had increased in their country over the past five years. Nearly a third had considered emigrating from Europe because they did not feel safe as a Jew, with the figure reaching between 40% and 48% in Hungary, France and Belgium.
Those concerns can be felt throughout the E,U.’s population of 1.1 million Jews. In the small French town of Eze, freelance writer Clara Kagan keeps her Judaism to herself. “I would never feel safe in Paris or in my village wearing my Jewish star,” she says. “When I go to America, I wear it but I have only worn it once or twice in France and felt I was being looked at so I stopped.”
The same fears are echoed, if more fiercely, by Linda Ban, the wife of a rabbi in Budapest, where the Jobbik party went as far as to call for the drawing up of a list of Jews in 2012 (the Jobbik member of parliament later amended his call to focus only on those Jews who hold double Israeli-Hungarian citizenship). “In Hungary, people find open anti-Semitism in the media, so they think they can say the same things. People think if they can say it on the radio or on the floor of parliament, so can I. I’m not sure if there’s more anti-Semitism now than there was ten years ago, but it’s definitely louder. The taboo has been broken.”
The unease is felt across Europe. “I would say that it is very hard for Jews to live in Europe today,” says Arie Zuckerman, special advisor to the president of the European Jewish Congress. I would not be so extreme as to say it’s starting to be impossible, but it is very hard. Jews are thinking twice before going to the synagogue on Saturday, and though it’s better in London, we hear it a lot from Jews in France, which has the biggest Jewish community in Europe. And definitely in Belgium, and definitely in the Scandinavian countries. Jews don’t feel comfortable to be identified as Jews in the streets.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took advantage of those fears to address Europe’s Jews in a statement on the Copenhagen attacks. “This wave of terror attacks can be expected to continue, including anti-Semitic and murderous attacks. We say to the Jews, to our brothers and sisters, Israel is your home and that of every Jew. Israel is waiting for you with open arms.”
Denmark’s chief rabbi, Jair Melchior, objected to Netanyahu’s remarks, telling the press on Feb. 15 that “terror is not a reason to move to Israel. People from Denmark move to Israel because they love Israel, because of Zionism, but not because of terrorism. If the way we deal with terror is to run somewhere else, we should all run to a deserted island.”
But more and more, Jews in other countries are weighing their options. In 2014, 7,000 of France’s roughly 500,000 Jews moved to Israel, double the number of the previous year. According to the Jewish Agency, immigration to Israel from Western Europe as a whole is up 88%. 620 of those immigrants came from the United Kingdom, a 20% increase.
If the Isaksens aren’t considering following suit, it’s at least partly because, historically, Denmark has been the exception in Europe, protecting its Jews where other countries failed. During the Second World War, it transported nearly the entire community to safety in neutral Sweden when the Germans invaded.
But in recent years, even Denmark has seen a rise in anti-Semitic attacks. Cans painted with the label of Zyklon B, a chemical used to produce gas in Nazi extermination camps during the Second World War, were left on the fence of the Copenhagen synagogue in 2013. That was just one of 43 anti-Semitic incidents that occurred that year according to the Jewish community in Denmark’s security unit. “It seems to be getting worse and worse” says Alf Isaksen, noting that he himself had been assaulted on the street. “Certainly we’re afraid.”
Still, he and his wife were grateful for the outpouring of support from other Danes. Peter Krogell was one of them. A minister at the German Lutheran church on the same street as the synagogue, Krogell brought his two boys to lay tulips outside the temple. “We came because we wanted to show our unity,” he said. “And because as Danes we believe that the only way to fight terror is with freedom and democracy. And love.” Throughout Europe, 1.1 million Jews are hoping that’s enough.

The price of Russian gas for most of the EU and Turkey could fall by up to 35% this year, according to reports by the Russia Ministry of Economy. The average price of gas supplied by Gazprom could be around $222 per 1,000 cubic metres for countries the company labels part of its “far abroad.”Sales to Europe account for more than half of the revenues of Gazprom, which generates around 8% of Russia’s GDP. A spokesman for Gazprom said it was too early to predict the final Russian gas price for Europe, which covers a quarter of its gas needs with supplies from Gazprom.
The European Commission will resume ministerial level consultations with Russia regarding the impact of the EU-Ukraine free trade agreement on the Russian economy. The resumption of the trilateral talks to find practical solutions to Russia’s concerns about implementing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and its trade section are part of the peace agreement concluded between Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine in Minsk to stop the hostilities in East Ukraine.
Deepening ties between Greece and Russia are sowing concerns in the West. The Russian ties to both parts of the new Greek coalition government – the leftist Syriza party and its junior party, Greek nationalist Panos Kammenos’s right-wing nationalist Independent Greeks – have flourished in recent years, fostered by a mix of shared Orthodox Christianity and traditional left-wing sympathies for Moscow in Greece. Kammenos met two senior pro-Kremlin lawmakers just before Greece’s elections on 25 January. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, the Syriza leader, has also forged contacts with Russian parliamentarians.

When it comes to fighting violent extremism, the "government does not have all the answers," a senior U.S. administration official said Monday, as he outlined plans for a White House summit to build new efforts against extremists. The three-day gathering begins Tuesday in Washington. It will include high-level officials from dozens of countries. U.S. officials say the goal is to empower communities to push back against violent extremism. They say during the summit organizers will highlight U.S. community programs that have been established in Boston, Los Angeles and the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The summit comes on the heels of some high-profile extremist attacks. In January, Islamist militants killed 17 people in and around Paris, beginning with an attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, which has angered many Muslims by publishing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. In Copenhagen, Danish intelligence chief Jens Madesen said investigators believe a gunman who killed two people in attacks on Saturday was inspired by Islamic radicalism. Also, Islamic State militants on Sunday released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya. "Countering violent extremism is one piece of a much broader strategy to confront groups such as Islamic State," said a senior administration official in a background briefing Monday. The summit will include sessions to highlight domestic and international efforts to prevent extremist groups from inspiring and radicalizing individuals in the United States and abroad. Participants also will work to identify steps to more effectively counter violent extremism. Progress report expected Organizers will review progress made since President Barack Obama issued a call to action against extremism last September at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. "We must take concrete steps to address the danger posed by religiously motivated fanatics, and the trends that fuel their recruitment," Obama said at the U.N. "This campaign against extremism goes beyond a narrow security challenge." The summit will include speeches by Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry. A senior administration official said a number of policy initiatives are expected to be unveiled during the sessions. On Thursday, Kerry will host ministerial-level sessions at the State Department, which will include remarks by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui. White House officials said participants will review their progress against extremism at the 2015 U.N. General Assembly.

Forces loyal to Yemen's president said they had seized strategic buildings in the southern city of Aden on Monday after a five-hour battle, escalating a civil conflict threatening to split the country in two. The militias supporting Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi wrested parts of Yemen's economic hub from security forces allied to the Houthi movement, including its main power station and intelligence headquarters, sources said. The country's north is dominated by the Shi'ite Muslim Houthis, who completed a takeover of the capital Sana'a last month. In the south, forces loyal to Hadi and separatists aiming to restore the former South Yemen appear to be in charge. Hadi's house arrest U.N. Yemen envoy Jamal Benomar tweeted on Monday that he had visited Hadi, who is still under house arrest at his residence. Benomar said he had briefed Hadi on the U.N. Security Council resolution adopted on Sunday calling for an end to his house arrest and that of his government. The United Nations Security Council on Sunday urged the Houthis to quit government institutions, threatening further steps if the violence does not stop. Minister of Information Nadia al-Sakkaf tweeter that she had also visited Hadi on Monday, adding he had a heart condition and was "quite ill." The Houthis forced Hadi to resign during their takeover, but he remains de jure president. They tried to dissolve the assembly two weeks ago, but its largest group, the General People's Congress party [GPC], objected. Multi-party talks The GPC said on Monday it had withdrawn its objection, boosting chances of a consensus in multi-party talks on picking a new national administration. Violence has escalated recently, filling the political vacuum left in January when the Houthis seized the presidential palace and forced Prime Minister Khaled Bahah's government to resign. Tens of thousands of Yemenis demonstrated in several cities on Saturday against Houthi rule as clashes between Houthis and Sunnis in a southern region left 26 dead. In clashes overnight, sources in the Popular Committees of Aden, run by Hadi's brother, Nasser, said they had also taken Aden's television station and the administrative building of its free trade zone, with the loss of three fighters. The Popular Committees confirmed several government buildings had been taken. Aden's governor, Abdel-Aziz bin Habtour, confirmed the clashes but denied Hadi loyalists had taken over the television station. "The situation is under control and what has happened is being dealt with," a Defense Ministry website quoted him as saying. Turkey becoming the latest country to withdraw its diplomats from Sana'a on Monday, following the closure of the embassies of the United States, major European nations and Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

A freight train carrying crude oil derailed in the eastern U.S. state of West Virginia Monday, sending at least one rail car into the Kanahwa River. The CSX train derailed in the early afternoon about 54 kilometers, or 33 miles, southeast of the state capital of Charleston. Local officials at the scene said at least one house and two tank cars were on fire. Amid a snowstorm, residents were evacuated from the nearby towns of Adena and Boomber Bottom, Reuters news agency reported a local TV station as saying. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or fatalities. Local media showed images of large flames and a thick plume of black smoke near a partly frozen river, with a number of houses nearby. Lawrence Messina, a spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, told Reuters that CSX Corp. officials said the train was carrying only crude oil. While it was not clear where the train was headed, it was traveling the same route as a train that derailed last year, setting off an explosion near the city of Lynchburg, Virginia.
