(SANAA, Yemen)—Yemeni security officials and witnesses say Saudi-led coalition airstrikes targeting Shiite rebels have resumed in the southern port city of Aden after the end of a five-day humanitarian ceasefire.
The ceasefire expired at 11 p.m. Sunday (2000 GMT, 4 p.m. EDT), and the coalition airstrikes hit rebel positions and tanks in several neighborhoods of Aden, the officials said. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, and the witnesses requested anonymity because they feared reprisals.
Since late March, Saudi Arabia has led airstrikes against the Shiite Houthi rebels and allied military units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The air campaign is aimed at weakening the Houthis and restoring ousted President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who fled the country in March.

The UN’s modest aims on Syria: keep channels open while waiting for the regional conflict to be resolved
It may have escaped notice but peace talks about Syria are once again under way. The United Nations, which is organising and directing them from Geneva, has avoided the title Geneva III. That is understandable, given that the first two big and much heralded attempts to reach an agreement to end Syria’s civil war, now in its fifth year, were such failures. Two of the world’s most distinguished mediators, former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and veteran Algerian envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, were unable to get the beginnings of a framework accord, or even to persuade the contending parties to actually discuss the issues face to face.
Both men resigned. Their successor, Staffan de Mistura, has adopted an approach that is both more modest and more inclusive. He wants a series of “separate consultations” with as many of the actors – the situation is too fragmented to speak of “sides” – as possible, including Iran. Some have not been invited, Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra being the most obvious. Others have turned down the invitation or accepted it only while warning they fear that talks may make matters worse.
The war’s resolution will almost certainly have to wait on some major shift in the balance of power

Haider al-Abadi prepares Shia forces to enter region after bombings target official sites in provincial capital Ramadi and military base is compromised
Iraq’s prime minister has called for the defence of the embattled province of Anbar to be reinforced and has ordered Shia militia to prepare to enter the fray as reports surfaced that Islamic State fighters had broken into a key military base in the area.
Isis forces have largely overrun the provincial capital of Ramadi, west of Baghdad, and prime minister Haider al-Abadi’s order for his forces to stand their ground comes after reports that some troops have put down their weapons, abandoned their vehicles and fled from the militants.

Steve White, chair of the Police Federation, says service is ‘on its knees’, and predicts end of policing by consent and move towards more violent style
Police will be forced to adopt a “paramilitary” style of enforcement if the government inflicts big budget cuts on them, the head of the police officers’ organisation has warned.
Steve White, chair of the Police Federation, said his 123,000 members, from police constables to inspectors, fear a move towards a more violent style of policing as they try to keep law and order with even fewer officers than now.
