CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Members of a historic black church returned to their sanctuary Sunday, perhaps united like never before, and will hear a sermon of recovery and healing, a message that will no doubt reverberate throughout the country. Sunday morning will mark the first worship service at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church since Dylann Roof, 21, sat among a Bible study group and opened fire after saying that he targeted them because they were black, authorities said. Among the nine killed was the church pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator.

Texas abortion law teed up for Supreme Court reviewWASHINGTON (AP) - Abortion is back before the Supreme Court, and the justices could signal by the end of June whether they are likely to take up the biggest case on the hot-button subject in nearly a quarter-century. If the court steps in, the hearing and the eventual ruling would come amid the 2016 presidential campaign.
TURIN, Italy (AP) - Pope Francis paused in silent prayer before the Shroud of Turin Sunday, becoming the latest of hundreds of thousands of people who have come this year to Turin's cathedral to view the burial linen some believe covered the body of Jesus after crucifixion. Francis sat for several minutes before the shroud, contained in a protective glass case. He lowered his head at times in apparent reflection and occasionally gazed up at the 4.3-meter (14-foot) long cloth. Then he took a few steps, placed his hand on the case, and walked away without comment.
US developing 'Plan B' for deporting convicted plane bomberWASHINGTON (AP) - The federal government has been exploring a "Plan B" to deport a man who placed a bomb on a Hawaii-bound airplane in 1982 and who has remained in immigration custody since being released from prison two years ago. Mohammed Rashed pleaded guilty in 2002 to his role in the bombing of Pan Am 830, which killed a Japanese teenager and injured more than a dozen others. Under the terms of his plea agreement, the U.S. government said it would work to deport the Jordanian-born Palestinian to the country of his choice after he finished serving his sentence on murder and conspiracy charges.
Game of chicken over Greece risks slipping out of controlFRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - OK, guys. You can swerve now. In the game of chicken between Greece and its creditors over whether the troubled country gets more bailout cash, each side has played its part, refusing to back down. Now time is running out and the politicians behind the opposing steering wheels are dangerously close to getting what neither side wants: a head-on collision.
Scherzer loses perfect game in 9th, throws no-hitter vs BucsWASHINGTON (AP) - Just one strike from a perfect game, Max Scherzer saw it slip away with a misplaced slider. Or, some thought, a misplaced elbow. Scherzer lost his bid in agonizing fashion, plunking a batter with two outs in the ninth inning before finishing off a no-hitter Saturday in the Washington Nationals' 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Shootings' emotional burden looms over Sunday sermonsCHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Members of a historic black church will return to their sanctuary Sunday and worship, perhaps united like never before, and similar sermons of recovery and healing will reverberate throughout the country.
Call for death penalty in shooting, but state lacks the drugCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Two days after the shooting deaths of nine people during a Bible study at a Charleston church, Republican Gov. Nikki Haley made a bold public statement: The gunman "absolutely" should be put to death. But her state, though largely pro-death penalty, can't secure one of the drugs needed for lethal injections and hasn't executed an inmate since 2011. Any potential execution order for Dylann Storm Roof, 21, would be years away. He is charged with nine counts of murder in Wednesday's massacre. He appeared briefly before a judge Friday, and his next court appearance isn't until October. Haley made her comments Friday on NBC's "Today" show, but the governor has no power in Roof's prosecution or sentencing.
Manhunt for escaped killers shifts after possible sightingFRIENDSHIP, N.Y. (AP) - The search for two convicted killers in New York shifted after possible sightings in the southern part of the state, 350 miles from the prison where the men escaped two weeks ago. New York State Police spokesman Beau Duffy said officers were investigating a possible sighting of the prisoners in Allegany County near the Pennsylvania border.

Austere brand of Islam on rise in Europe, stirring concernsPARIS (AP) - Its imams preach austere piety, its tenets demand strict separation of sexes - and some of its most radical adherents are heeding the call of jihad. Salafism, an Islamic movement based on a literal reading of the Quran, is on the rise in France, Germany and Britain, security officials say, with Salafis sharply increasing their influence in mosques and on the streets. The trend worries European authorities, who see Salafism as one of the inspirational forces for young Europeans heading to Syria or Iraq to do battle for the Islamic State group. Experts, however, point out that the vast majority of Salafis are peace-loving.
New Orleans police continue manhunt after officer killedNEW ORLEANS (AP) - Authorities canvassed a New Orleans neighborhood late into Saturday night in search of the man believed to have fatally shot a police officer who was transporting him - handcuffed and in the back of a police SUV - to jail. Saturday morning's death of veteran officer Daryle Holloway, 45, left investigators struggling for answers as they tried to cope with a colleague's death. It was unclear how the suspect got the gun, how he worked his handcuffed wrists from behind his back or why he was able to get through a barrier that separated him from the front seat.

Virginia attorney general announces rescue plan for collegeSWEET BRIAR, Va. (AP) - Prominent alumnae of Sweet Briar College are rejoicing over a mediated settlement to keep the 114-year-old Virginia women's college open, a rescue deal that caps frantic monthslong efforts to stave off a planned August closure. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring announced the settlement Saturday, saying $12 million raised by determined alumnae to keep the women's college afloat this coming academic year. He said the resolution, which requires a judge's OK, followed hundreds of hours of negotiations involving the college, a local attorney fighting closure and the money-raising nonprofit, Saving Sweet Briar Inc.

Report: Wait lists for vets even longer today than last yearWASHINGTON (AP) - The number of veterans seeking health care but ending up on waiting lists of one month or more is 50 percent higher now than it was a year ago when a scandal over false records and long wait times wracked the Department of Veterans Affairs, The New York Times reported. The VA also faces a budget shortfall of nearly $3 billion, the Times reported in a story posted online ahead of its Sunday editions. The agency is considering furloughs, hiring freezes and other significant moves to reduce the gap, the newspaper reported.

Cousins killed in Berkeley balcony collapse had a twins bondCOTATI, Calif. (AP) - Two cousins who were among the victims killed when a balcony collapsed in Berkeley were remembered Saturday as kind, fun-loving young women who shared a bond of twins even though they grew up an ocean apart - one in California and the other in Ireland. Ashley Donohoe, 22, of Rohnert Park, California, and her cousin Olivia Burke, 21, of Ireland were mourned Saturday at a Catholic Mass, where those in attendance wiped away tears but also laughed as a priest shared memories of the best friends.

An epic effort from Day for 4-way tie at US OpenUNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) - The toughest test in golf met one tough player Saturday at the U.S. Open. Jason Day had every reason to withdraw when he collapsed on the final hole of his second round with a nasty bout of vertigo. He gave it his best shot under the stiffest conditions yet at Chambers Bay. The vertigo returned on the back nine, along with nausea. When he turned his head toward the target, he had to wait for his eyes to stop dancing before he could swing. He thought about quitting three times.

The officer was identified as Daryle Holloway, 45, a 22-year veteran of the department, Harrison said. He was the father of three children.
"Today is an extremely sad day," Harrison said at a news conference. "Not only is it a sad day for me, it's a sad day for the city of New Orleans, especially the Holloway family."

Boys, who was handcuffed from behind, was somehow able to get his hands in front of him and get into the front seat through a gap in the cage that separates the front and back seats of the police car, Harrison said.
While Holloway was shot, it was not immediately clear if he died from that wound, because he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole at Elysian Fields and North Claiborne avenues. An autopsy is pending.
Paramedics responded at about 8 a.m. and found that Holloway was in the front seat suffering from a gunshot wound. He died about 9 a.m. at a local hospital, Harrison said.
It was not immediately clear if the gun used was Holloway's.
"We don't believe it was the officer's gun," said New Orleans Police Department spokesman Tyler Gamble.
Authorities from the NOPD, Louisiana State Police and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, among other agencies, were searching for Boys late Saturday afternoon.
"We have a large manhunt to look for this subject," Harrison said. "He will not get away with this and justice will be served and he will pay for what he did in killing our brother, Officer Holloway."
Mayor Mitch Landrieu decried the incident as a "despicable, cowardly act."
"Killing an officer in the line of duty is an attack on our community that will not stand," Landrieu said. "We are bringing together every law enforcement resource at our disposal to find, capture and prosecute Travis Boys for this heinous crime."
Harrison described Holloway as a "very experienced" officer known for his dedication to the job and fun-loving personality.
"He was a very lively person full of personality. You couldn't be around Daryle for three minutes without becoming his friend," Harrison said. "I personally know he was brave and courageous and served the city well every day of his career."
Harrison notified Holloway's family and fellow officers of the death a short time after the officer died.
"As a new chief it was the absolute hardest thing I had to do," Harrison said. "You never get used to that."

Was racist manifesto written by Dylann Roof?

Charleston suspect Dylann Roof’s alleged manifesto discovered online

Metadata associated with this image indicates it was taken on May 11. This photo of suspected killer Dylann Roof …
A website surfaced Saturday featuring a racist and rambling manifesto and dozens of photos of accused Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof posing with white supremacy symbols and the Confederate flag.
Roof, 21, remains jailed on nine counts of murder for allegedly opening fire in the historically African-American Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday.
Who authored the manifesto or posted the images has yet been confirmed. But through online registration records, Yahoo News confirmed the website’s domain, lastrhodesian.com, was created by a Dylann Roof of Eastover, S.C. on Feb. 9. The street address used is the same Roof has given authorities since he was captured in Shelby, N.C. on Thursday. On Feb. 10, the registration information was purposely obscured.
The domain history for www.lastrhodesian.com initially listed Dylann Roof as the registrant on Feb. 9. (Screen …
In a written statement issued Saturday evening, Charleston police said they and the FBI had become aware of the site and are “taking steps to verify the authenticity of these postings,” but declined to release further details.
The webpage traces its author’s path toward strong beliefs in white supremacy and the race debate ignited after the shooting of black teen Trayvon Martin as a moment of racial “awakening.” The text ends with the author's statement that it's time to take the beliefs expressed, “to the real world.”
“I have no choice. I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. We have no skinheads, no real KKK, no one doing anything but talking on the internet. Well someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.”
While writings like these are rare, retired FBI profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole said killer manifestos are all about “the writings of a very narcissistic, arrogant individual.”
“They feel this need to tell the world how they were wronged,” O’Toole said. “It’s like they have to shove our nose into why they are entitled into what it is they are going to do.”
O’Toole, who has seen hundreds of manifestos during her career studying killers, read the document posted to Roof’s website at the request of Yahoo News.
While not vouching for it’s authenticity, O’Toole described it as scattered and likely plagiarized.
“The themes don’t indicate that this person is spending a lot of time to do research,” said O’Toole, who now directs the Forensic Science Program at George Mason University“The depth and breadth is remarkably shallow.”
The 2,444-word manifesto wanders from topic to topic spewing about, among other things, patriotism, blacks, Jews, Hispanics and Asians.
“He’s trying to weave like a quilt of those themes that he went out in search of,” O’Toole said. “Which tells me that whoever the author is had preexisting opinions and ideas … and then you go to the Internet to get a little bit of this and a little bit of that to fuel what you already believe and already think.”
The New York Times, reports that according to web server logs, the manifesto was last modified at 4:44 p.m. ET on Wednesday, about four hours before the Charleston shootings. Roof's friends reportedly said they last saw him near Livingston, S.C. on Wednesday morning. Driving to Charleston would have taken just under two hours.
“Unfortunately at the time of writing I am in a great hurry and some of my best thoughts, actually many of them have been to be left out and lost forever. But I believe enough great White minds are out there already. Please forgive any typos, I didn’t have time to check it.”
Benjamin Crump, attorney for Trayvon Martin’s family and a leading national voice in civil rights issues, said he was troubled to learn the manifesto mentioned the Martin case.
“Regardless of how this demented, racist individual attempts to shift the focus of his murderous actions, we will remain steadfast in our defense of the voiceless around this country,” Crump said in a statement. “They need it now more than ever. My thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of this terrible tragedy and the Charleston community.”
Dozens of images posted to the site show Roof in historic locations like a Confederate soldier cemetery and a slave burial ground.
A picture from www.lastrhodesian.com shows Dylann Roof in the same clothes he had on when he allegedly entered …
In one image, the suspected gunman is posed on the beach wearing the same clothes he is seen wearing on surveillance footage as he entered the church on Wednesday. The numbers 1488 and a rune symbol associated with white supremacist groups are scratched in the sand. The number has been adopted by white supremacists, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Racist Skinhead Glossary.
The “88" refers to H, the eighth letter of the alphabet and is a symbol for “Heil Hitler.” The “14” refers to a 14-word slogan popularized by David Lane, a white supremacist serving a 190-year sentence in the murder of a Jewish talk show host. The slogain is: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”
About a third of the 60 photos from the website have metadata associated with them that reveal dates. If the camera data is correct, Roof, who lived two hours away near Columbia, was in the Charleston area at least three times in April.
If Roof was updating his website up until shortly before his alleged crime, it would become another example of what O’Toole calls “creating kind of living manifesto as they lead up to the event.”
She referenced Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old college student who posted a 141-page manifesto called “My Twisted World” online and a seven-minute video on YouTube titled “Retribution” before killing six people and wounding more than a dozen others in May 2014.
“What that shows is that they are not in a state, necessarily, of frenzy,” O’Toole said. “They are building this historical record kind of, ultimately leading up to the shooting … trying to justify their actions.”
Suspected killer Dylann Roof poses for a picture at the Sankofa Burial Grounds for slaves in Charleston, S.C.
Word of the Roof's alleged manifesto website spread quickly after it was first discovered by Twitter users
Emma Quangel
and
Henry Krinkle
. By late Saturday afternoon, the website was not accessible and appeared to be offline.
The site’s title phrase, The Last Rhodesian,” is a reference to an unrecognized state in Africa, now Zimbabwe, that during the 1960s and '70s that was controlled by a white minority. White supremacists have idealized this era and the Rhodesian flag has been used as a racist symbol.
A picture of Roof from Facebook circulated after he was identified as the alleged shooter shows him wearing a jacket adorned with flag patches for both Apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia.
The trove of images on the site also include photos of a Glock .45-caliber handgun, which investigators have said was the type of weapon used in the murders. Roof reportedly purchased the gun in April with money given to him by his family for his 21st birthday.
Other pictures were taken at the Sankofa Burial Grounds for slaves on the McLeod Plantation in Charleston. Some appear to have been taken at the Boone Hall plantation in Mount Pleasant, S.C., and the Museum and Library of Confederate History in Greenville, S.C.
The author of the manifesto writes he did not grow up in a racist home or environment.
Living in the South, almost every White person has a small amount of racial awareness, simply beause of the numbers of negroes in this part of the country.
Roof's family broke their silence late Friday by releasing a statement extending their sympathies victims’ families.
Words cannot express our shock, grief, and disbelief as to what happened that night,” it reads.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed this week. We have all been touched by the moving words from the victims’ families offering God’s forgiveness and love in the face of such horrible suffering.

Purported Dylann Roof manifesto reviewed by FBI

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The historic black church where nine people were killed will re-open for a Sunday service, and the FBI said it was reviewing a manifesto purportedly written by the suspected gunman.
The website linked to Dylann Roof surfaced online Saturday and contained photos of him holding a burning American flag and standing on one. He was also seen holding a Confederate flag, considered a divisive symbol by civil rights leaders and others. The hate-filled 2,500-word essay talks about white supremacy and concludes by saying the author alone will need to take action.
It’s unclear if Roof wrote it but the rants are in line with what he has told friends and what he said before allegedly opening fire inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church Wednesday night.
Cleaning crews mopped up the crime scene on Saturday and some church members entered it for the first time since the shooting.
Harold Washington, 75, was with the group and saw the room the victims were shot in.
“They did a good job cleaning it up, there were a few bullet holes around but what they did, they cut them out so you don’t see the actual holes,” he said.
He said he expected an emotional service Sunday, and a large turnout.
“We’re gonna have people come by that we’ve never seen before and will probably never see again, and that’s OK,” he said. “It’s a church of the Lord — you don’t turn nobody down.”
The church had that same welcoming nature when Roof walked into their Bible study, Felecia Sanders, who survived the shooting, said at Roof’s bail hearing Friday. She lost her son Tywanza in the attack.
A federal law enforcement official close to the investigation said the FBI is aware of the website linked to Roof and is reviewing it. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the case.
Internet registry records show that the website was created on Feb. 9 via a Russian registry service with the owner’s personal details hidden. A man who answered the phone at the Moscow-based company would not say who the site’s owner was.
Roof is being held in jail, facing nine counts of murder and a weapons charge.
The victims included the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a state senator who doubled as the church’s lead pastor, and eight others who played multiple roles in their families and communities: ministers and coaches, teachers and a librarian, counselors and choir singers and the elderly sexton who made sure the church was kept clean.
A police affidavit released Friday accused Roof of shooting all nine multiple times, and making a “racially inflammatory statement” as he stood over an unidentified survivor.
Roof had complained while getting drunk on vodka recently that “blacks were taking over the world” and that “someone needed to do something about it for the white race,” according to Joey Meek, who tipped off the FBI when he saw his friend on surveillance images.
